Two months until the end of the year. Where did the time go? How many of us are working on holiday gifts? How many of us are just trying to keep on top of things? HOw many of us are losing that battle? SurprisedWe've had a great year in here so far, can't wait to see what this month will produce?

Hit my carpet warp stash for more tote bags.  Already have the tote bodies dressed and weaving on the loom and have the side panel warp wound and waiting to go on next.  Too much fun to weave - gotta love weaving with bright colors.  The carpet warp is nice and bright, and I am using all the colors of plastic newspaper bags that I have.

theresasc, I can imagine that each morning, you go to your loom like an elf to see if they're still there!  It's like magic when it's that much fun.  Happy weaving!

RedSamur

Won't get a lot of weaving done today, because I'll spend the day-light hours trying to teach a friend of mine how to crochet. It's our second attempt, first one didn't go so well, so wish me luck ;o)

theresasc

My looms are still here!  LOL

You are right that it is so much fun when there is something interesting on the looms, especially when they go on the loom smoothly.

Nakia

Thanks Sally, I tried to find a group for TOTTs here while reading everything I could find on them. I must have overlooked it here in my haste to digest all the info I did find which was really interesting.

We made it down there where the loom was with no major issues short of me stomping a hole in the passenger side floorboard every time someone stopped abruptly in front of us in Houston. It seems my brakes were not working as fast as I thought hubbys should. Surprised Not my favorite place to be at 8am on a weekday!  We left at 11:30pm Tue night & made it home at 10:45pm Wed night. Stayed & visited with the lady I bought my TOTT from for about an hour or so. Then off we went home only stopping for short breaks. I had actually been up for 32 hours straight by the time I was able to get myself in bed Thur morning at 12:35am. Believe me that is not something this 60 yr old wants to do very often anymore!

So here are a few photos of my "Baby Girl" in her new place of honor. Still considering a name for her. Laughing Ran out of time for this week, back to work tomorrow night. Will get her cleaned up a bit, although she is very clean & in excellent condition. Then to find a pattern & get a warp on her. Cool

ETA: Forgot to add she is a 36" 4 shaft 6 treaddle beauty. The last photo is showing my little weaving studio with both my sweet looms. I am pleased that I have plenty of room to warp from the back of either loom without having to move them.

Nakia

RedSamur that is such a cute card loom! And I love your cards and name for it too. Laughing That's going to be a very pretty band when you get it done.

Here's a question I must tackle before I put the overshot warp on the loom.  I want to use my new Ashford for this piece, but right now, I only have the 10 dent Reed it came with. For 24 epi, I think I'd have to use 3232323222. Do you think three "Two's" in a row will affect the cloth?  It's 10/2 perle.  Thanks!  Hunkering down on a Saturday with pretty, light snow falling is a perfect weaverly day!

RedSamur

Thanks for nice comments here and on my project page :)

I started weaving today, noticed that 4 of my 12 cards were threaded incorrectly. Fixed that, as well as a tension issue.

Also still working on "outside the frame" hope to have pix to share tomorrow

Mutz

Well the past couple of days, I finished sleying the reed for my floor loom. I also finished a couple of straps on the inkle loom. And today I got to go to the Kid n Ewe and Llamas Too fiber festival. And what did I find but a beautiful 2 tone 12" shuttle to bring home to my loom. I couldn't believe for such a beauty of a shuttle it was only $25. Seemed way too good to pass up. I also picked up several of the woven grass baskets to keep project materials in. I love those baskets and I'm always sad when I realize that they are all busy with other projects and I have to get a boring box for whatever I'm working on at that moment. Now I should not have that problem =)

Mutz

Oh lol! RedSamur I just realized those are Magic the Gathering cards. What a wonderful use for those cards. My husband and I played that game years ago. We had to stop though because we kept arguing over the rules. Now i know what to do with the cards haha.

Sue,

Myself and several others have just been discussing overshot in another thread, http://weavolution.com/forum/weaving/novice-trouble-overshot-32012 Is 24 wpi 50% of the wpi for 10/2, if so you may want to consider 2,2,2,3 for 22.5 Epi, as listed in the reed substitution chart here, http://weavolution.com/reed-substitution-table

It also depends a bit on what you are using for weft either way the best way to know is to sample!

Best of luck!

Sue in VT

Thanks for your input, Erica J. It is wrapping at 24, and since loose tabby is what I think I need, I will sley 2-2-2-3.  That gives me 25.5" in the Reed. The worst thing that can happen is that I'm unhappy with how it's weaving, and resley.  It's all about the learning!  When I contacted the runner's author, she graciously wrote to me to say I could use 24 sett but to make sure I beat firmly to square the pattern.  I think that with a bit more relaxed sett, it will be easier to square.  I think......  Off I go!

Below: One of our members wrote a book in 2014, so we had a book signing as part of the event. I took advantage of a break in the action to capture Sherrie Miller, writer of Confessions of a Weaver.

A few more photos of some of the work can be found at the Jockey Hollow Weavers facebook page.

I wove, then unwove, and then rewove a section on a towel set.  I had really messed up my beat on one repeat and had to fix it.  I cut off a semi-failure off the smaller 8-shaft floor loom, so since that loom was naked, I reworked a fellow weavers draft, decided on a project and colors for it, and wound that warp - whew!  Now I need a nap!  LOL

Sally, that was large sale!  Nice job for your guild.

Sue in VT

well, my good old rigid heddle loom has been naked for a whole week, so yesterday I warped up the linen runner from page 58 of Betty Davenport's Rigid Heddle Weaving.  I'm humidifying my studio for increased humidity, and I'm learning how to handle linen.  My question is about Leno when you're weaving a succession of rows.  The project picture shows several rows, and they're forming an "x" like pattern, very pleasing to look at.  When I do more than one row, my pattern doesn't "x" like it should.  I'm thinking there's a trick for alternating Leno rows, but my brain won't solve it.  Anyone had Leno experience and knows what I need to do?  The direction says "weave 2 1/2 " of any Leno variation...."  Thanks, Sue

Jo Raymond

This is my first weaving and my next warp. Dish towells from 10/2 cotton and scarves. The rate at which I am finding mistakes has slowed down. Hopefully, I am making less as well.

Love seeing shots of your guild sale, Sally.  I wish I was local to a guild!  When we lived on L.I., I had the Basket Weavers Guild each month, and the annual sale at Hallockville.  The comraudery of fellow weavers was golden! But thank goodness for Weavolution!❤️

Hi Sue, I think what' going on is this. After you make your twists all across the warp and pull the weft through, change the shed and put in a PLAIN weave pick of weaving on the return trip, in other words, no ends are crossed going back. Then, going across the third time, twist again, on the return, plain weave:)

i think that's it! It's going to be beautiful!

I love seeing you do all this different kind of weaving:)

Cathie

dressed and weaving.  That always makes me happy.  This morning I finished dressing a loom with a 4-shaft scarf that only uses 4 treadles and I am having a heck of a time getting used to that - I keep going for more treadles:-)  Almost everything that I have woven on this particular loom has used 8 treadles or more.  I move my foot and press air. Oh well, it will get better.

Mutz

on days like these I suppose I should be grateful that I at least was able to wind a couple of bobbins. that is my great contribution to the wonderful world of weaving Today....I wound bobbins.

SusanBH

Me too, Mutz, me too.  I have weaving to do but I just haven't been able to get to it.  I'm hoping I'll have more time over Thanksgiving weekend to make some progress (especially since I have bobbins all wound and ready now).

Artistry

Mutz and SusanBH, that was my intro to weaving during the ages 5-8 , wind my Great Aunt Jesse's bobbins, oh so carefully! Started off with fat wool, and finally graduated to cotton. She worked on this one project , that every time I was over I wound the same color cotton for ,rosy peach( I know Sally!). It took forever! later I found out it was a coverlet for a double  bed.  She left it to my mom, my mom left it to me:)

Winding bobbins is important:)

Erica J

Great progress everyone. I do not normally stay home from work when I am sick. However I was diagnosed with a chest infectio  and just about told off by the doctor when I asked if I was contagious! Why do I not normally stay home? Because I'm honestly no good at "resting".

What passed for resting today was a nap, cleaning off q counter that had collected too much stuff, transferring my medieval weaving website from one server to the other, and drafting a very simple damask pattern. Not much wqs physically strenous, or stressful, so I still think it cou ts as resting!

I am obviously feeling pretty good today. Thank goodness for being able to browse Weavolution whike I'm stuck on the couch!

theresasc

this morning.  Have about a half of body woven.  I need to cut up some more bags for weft.  I know I will need more to finish up what is on the loom and then to weave the sides.

Cathie, that is so wonderful that you had a family member who wove.  I did not even realize that there was such a thing as a loom that one could have in their house until about 15 years ago.  Weaving cloth was always in the back of my mind, I knew it was woven on a loom but just did not know that people did it outside of factories.  As a youngster, my exposure to fiber was that my mom knit & crocheted and I had a potholder loom - that was it.

Erica - I styed home yesterday with a splitting headache and sinus infection. I did nap a but but also cleaned off the computer table. That was actualyl a larger project than it sounds like since I basically could not even see the table the computer and printer was sitting on! Did some knitting, wove a couple if picks on the dish towel warp. . . I was limited in what I could do since I was also experienceing some vertigo along with everyhing else. I am at work today but probably should have stayed home another day - but am not contagious!

RedSamur

Been quietly finishing frame 1 of 4, combining crochet, macrame and weaving :)

Next frame will dive into my red / orange stash

Erica J

Endorph, I hope you are feeling better. I'm going to try to go back to work tomorrow.

RedSamur, that is very cool work!

Walkingquail

I keep running into folks who are "coming down with something" At least that what I heard them say as I quickly backed away! I know I'll get something but would like to wait till January. I got my flu shot which is supposed to be the right combo this year, fingers crossed.

I have been enjoying weaving scarves instead of dishtowels! One is a joy on my RH loom. I have to wind the warp for another set of dishtowels in white, gray, saffron and black soo because I need a few and a friend needs one for Christmas gifts. I tell myself that maybe one year I will be all ready for gift sale season but who am I kidding? I am setting up my tent in my own driveway the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I'm in a good location for neighbors and grocery shoppers since I'm on the way to the Safeway.

Back to work!

Still out of town, doing shows.  The drive from Vancouver to Calgary was a little *too* exciting.  Reports from the road on my blog...

in the Midwest - first snow of the year Friday into Saturday - YUK!  I was getting very spoiled with 60 degree weather in November.  Perfect weaving weather - I have a fun little variation on Rosepath going, only 4 shaft, 4 treadle.  This is the one I keep tripping on, looking for more treadles.  Hopefully by the time I get some length on the scarf my treadling will be a bit more graceful:-)

No weaving for me, I'm afraid. Chocolatiering instead!

But the greetings of the season for you (on English toffee):

Wow!! Sally, what kind of yarn is that? The colors are fabulous!

sally orgren

And I could not fit two whole rows of skeins in this shot, and I cropped left & right to boot! I am always mesmerized by this beautiful display of native, hand dyed yarns.

One of the finest native weavers I have encountered also works at this trading post. (Elsie Glander). She has what I would call an "industrial" Navjo loom - the tensioning device is impressive and puts a tremendous amount of force on her warps. She is also fast, completing several large commissions a year.

Artistry

Thereasc, like your variation on rosepath, 3D' ish, nice :)

Tien, your chocolates and toffee ! You'd think by this time I wouldn't drool as much, but they are just exquisite looking! How did this tradition of yours get started?

And Sally, more eye candy!the crystals on the rock are fabulous! Skeins of yarn , for what? , tapestry weaving? Yikes, who ya gonna call?  I understand it's Navajo weaving and complicated, which I've never done, and is on my list, but isn't hopping in that chair tempting? That loom is a tool of beauty in my eyes!

Beauty and I are talking to each other again:) so hopefully we'll be good weaving partners this time. I plan on straightening out some warp on her and continue beaming today, as I had to unwind the warp and add ends from last time. I plan on making good progress on this today:)

Exciting News! I signed up for Rebecca Metzoff's Tapestry workshop in Plymouth, Vermont in June! I'm so, so excited! It's a masterclass ( yikes!) and it's on Color and Design, my favs! I've never had a class from her, everyone says she is fun and a wonderful Teacher. I love her work!

Surgery was supposed to have happened before American Thanksgiving.  Not scheduled yet even and they said they were in a hurry! Well the good news is I get to eat Turkey with the rest of you guys :)

theresasc

that loom looks so inviting, not to mention all that yarn!  I have gone around and around with myself about Navajo weaving, to do or not to do, but I know for sure that I love looking at it.  A friend has an extensive collection of Navajo rugs and I just love looking at them.  Glad to hear that you are back to Beauty, I hope she behaves for you:-)

This morning I have been hopping around, wove for awhile on a scarf and now I am winding a warp for some more towels.  My plan is to have them for a Christmas gift but since all my looms are occupied I need to get weaving.  Typical of me, instead of actually weaving off the loom I want to use, I wind a warp.

And I am still working out of my stash!

Erica J

Wow gorgeous chocolates, weaving, yarn!

I think I finally cracked my next damask pattern! Wish me luck tonight and let's hope I remember my tablet for photos!

Cathie, I got started on chocolates in college, where I was cooking for a group of fellow students. I got interested in making chocolates, and wound up selling some in the student-run candy store.

After I graduated, well, I wasn't getting along with my family, so I didn't go home over Thanksgiving weekend. Rather than mope bitterly all weekend, I started making chocolates every Thanksgiving and sending them out as (early) Christmas presents. With my parents freshly divorced, it was...tactful...to send everyone the same thing lest someone's feelings get hurt, and everybody loved the chocolates so no one complained. :-)

I've developed and refined my methods over the last twenty-five years (gad - has it really been that long? OMG, it has!), and have reached the point where I'm basically doing professional level work, just not as a day job. There are ways I could make my chocolates look better/more professional, but they mostly involve things like buying an $8,000 enrobing machine, or require more space/equipment than I can fit into my home, or are too slow. Since I'm making about 50-60 pounds of chocolates in my kitchen/dining room over a period of four days, plus another ~30-40 pounds in the week or two leading up to Chocopalooza, speed is essential.

So anyway, that's the story! It started as a simple hobby and seems to have mushroomed into something far more epic. Kinda like weaving. :-)

Artistry

That's something I admire about you Tien, when you get interested in something, you dive in, work hard and learn all you can ! Plus, turn out a pro :) when we pass around the box of chocolates with coffee this Thanksgiving I'll think of you:) thank you for the story !

Back to Beauty today:)

bags to finish up the warp of tote bag bodies this morning.  I am now antsy to get a towel warp on this loom.  Autumn and winter just turn crazy for me regarding weaving - so many ideas and projects I want to do.  Sometimes it turns into a curse having as many looms as I do - I want to weave on them all!

to all the members in the US. Have a great day however you may be celebrating it! I am so thankful for all of you - you are wonderfully talented and generous, and so willing to share your talents and knowledge with all of us. Cool

here in the US and wherever else you may be who celebrate this "tasty" holiday! My family always loved to call it "Turkey Day". :)

I got off work for my cycle of 4 days this morning, so I will not be cooking a traditional turkey & dressing feast here at home. After I take a short nap hubby & I will go out somewhere and find a nice turkey meal to devour. I quit cooking the big holiday meals after it became just us two. Just not the same as when my Mom, sister & brother were still alive & all got together. And since my son & DIL live in Alaska they can't come for holidays any longer.

On a lighter(?) note I am working on my warp for a Rosepath rug attempt on my TOTT. It took me a couple of weeks to decide exactly what I wanted to try for my first project on her. I kept going through all my old Handwoven magazines looking for that perfect "first time" stunner. At least in my mind I envision this to be a real knockout. LOL Truthfully, I am only hoping that my rendition of the Rosepath pattern I chose will vaguely resemble the beautiful example I will be going by. I will carry on with my preparing the warp & hope to have it on the loom within a couple weeks of my time off days. Cool

I always start threading the heddles from the centre to avoid that happening.
