June is busting out all over - or in the case of Texas - flooding - We have had some flash floods here but nothing compared to other parts of the state. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been or who is currenty dealing with the aftermath of the wet and severe weather of the past month or so. I wish we could send some of our water west to California!  Hopefully June will be more settled weatherwise. In the meantime - I have been enjoying seeing everyone's projects and progress - weave on all!

forgot to say 16 Shaft.

That's really nice Cathie. Thanks for sharing the photos of the piece. I'm curious of the bead type leno, I've read a few Facebook users suggesting this style of leno as well. I know there are blogs out there on the bead leno as well. Another structure to mark on the trial list. :)

What kind of trout did you catch? I've always fished for speckled brook trout and Atlantic salmon locally. :)

Artistry

We caught Rainbow and Brown trout up to 19 in. , ate a couple ,released the rest.It was too much fun. Fly fishing, I caught myself too a few times, Lol, gotta work on that cast:)fishing The Little Big Horn in Montana.

wove some Huck lace today, 4 shaft sample, no pattern, just an example to show what it looks like against the Huck weft spots andHuck warp spots.

thanks on the bead Leno. With the bead Leno , as I recall , one doesn't get plain weave , one can get basket weave. With the Doup Leno plain weave is possible, as you know:) with the bead Leno I used 4 threads in a block. For instance, Threads on shaft 4 and 1 were brought together under 2 & 3 and the bead( straw ) was slipped on. 4&1 work together as a pair, making the twisting action. All 4 threads got dented together.

I am up to my old tricks, weaving like a mad woman trying to get as much across the beam as possible before I leave tomorrow for 8 days.  The van is loaded to the gills with teaching aids (way too many!), yarn for students, yarn and textiles for sale.  And it is supposed to rain on Friday during pack in, but at least supposed to be dry for the drive.  I will take what I can get!

Back to weaving and trying to figure out what else I've forgotten to pack, although where it will go...

Anyone going to be at Olds, I'll be in my vendor booth Friday afternoon.  Come say hi!

cheers,

Laura

I'm weaving new samplers for my upcoming tapestry class.  The yarn I'm using is Mora, from Glimakra USA, which I haven't used before so I'm doing the color sample as I did last summer with this new yarn.  I'm also trying a few things with transparency effects and also hatching on the green/blue side of the warp.  I've rewarped the loom for new samples and will start them tomorrow.

Artistry

Good Luck Laura, safe travels and hope you have great students!

Tommye, the sample looks great, I like the transparency, something that eludes me. IS it Mora that is single ply? your loom looks interesting, a nice size.

bjr1957

Yeah!  Got a total of 6 towels not 7 as I had thought.  Pics ASAP!  Quite proud of myself for not giving up on them.  Had the thought that I bit off more than I could chew.  Did not get scared and cut them off the loom!!

Laura!  You Go Girl and have a good time teaching.  Wish I could attend Olds.  I have heard of it and it really is a chance to learn.  Tommye! I must learn from you one day too.

Am trying to get a warp onto the heavily modified rigid heddle with a 'free day' all to myself and now the 'visitors' have started. Now have to switch tactics to doing the washing up and making morning tea available. Hurrumph!!!!

Hopefully when the project is underway there will be a photo.

tommye scanlin

Cathie, the Faro is a single, I think.  Mora is small, 2-ply worsted and I'm using it 6 strands in 12/12 seine twine warp.  The next warp is 12/9.  Both are sett about 9 epi.  It's slightly smaller than the Alv from Kathe.

Erica J

TJ, our son (who will turn 3 next month), needed a bit of entertainment while he waited for breakfast to cook. So TJ and I went to check the latest fixes on my texture warp. I have fixed the last threading error, but still have 2 sleighing errors. Ah well this really should be the last! I also found 1 small threading error in my taquete warp, fortunately it is one 4 thread group, so those can just get untied, properly threaded and sleighed and I should be good to go!

Next to work on the warp addition to Oliver's diamond twill cloth and then winding my next damask warp! Did I mention my goal for the next few weeks is to have every loom warped up, so I can weave, weave, weave all summer long?!?!

Artistry

Thank you Tommye! I know the yarn you're talking about now, nice to know the weft bundle you're using; lot's of room for color blending:)

good goals Erica! All looms warped! Nirvana !

my goal is to keep my projects limited to sampling laces on the floor loom until after the summer. I have the brain surgeries in 3 weeks. After recovery I'll start Patagonia in earnest( the Fall ) and continue Lace weaves. Can't wait for tapestry/Patagonia! But am happy now:)

laurafry

don't know if there will be a 'storm' but the vendor hall will open in about 75 minutes.  We are pretty much ready, just tweaking.  Lots of fibre pretties, must contain myself!   At least until I sell some of my stuff!  Classroom has been located but currently locked.  Will have to get it open tomorrow morning as there are two looms to dress for the students.  Class begins Sunday morning.

excitement!

Six frame looms plus six table looms x4 yds in 10 days. Yes- summer camp prep day is tomorrow and Monday I'll have 3 knitting classes and one beginning weaving....  Why is it that I care so much about passing it on?  Fingers actually swollen.  Need an ice pack.

If I could figure out how to upload pictures I would.

Sally, wish I was at Midwest! I hear it's a great Conference!

bjr, congrats on your towels, may there be many more:)

fiberassociations, if you push the help button in the Orange part on the upper right side of your screen, it has all sorts of instructions. You'll get the hang of it:)

i'm off to weave some more Huck Lace, this sample all in light gray silver. Then I think I'll do a couple in color. The early weaver catches the shuttle, at least this one does, later in the day it goes whomp! On the floor, ha! ha!

TC-2 looms being manufactured

My weaverly photo for today: TC-2 jacquard looms being manufactured at Digital Weaving Norway. One of them is mine. :-)

(Scheduled ship date was June 30, back in April when I ordered; waiting to hear back on the actual ship date. Coming up soon - can't wait!!)

laurafry

not much actual weaving happening, but have already met several brand new weavers excited about learning, met several students from level one, met a couple other teachers in person, set up the class warp (value scale) and will consult with my partner shortly to finalize the class format.   There were so many people signed up for level one there are two full classes so we are team teaching. ;)

so nice to see interest in learning weaving growing!  Still trying to get a satellite program for weaving started, too.   Ah, the possibilities!   :)

cheers

That's so great Laura, it makes me really happy to hear that new weavers are lining up at the door!

Tien I know you're going to have a blast with that TC-2, when you get it!

ReedGuy, now I'm remembering " the law of Huck"  lol! Used to weave it a lot but it's been awhile. The sett is open and too easy to over beat. Especially when I start to cruise! It's worth getting right though, it's so pretty:)

actually going to Croatia next week and should find some bobbin lace. Will send pix when I do. Hopefully on my I phone!

Erica J

So exciting, Laura! I can't wait to hear more about your class and a possible satellite program!

i realized we are camping several times this summer,  so I better get warping up my tablet loom!  CoA warp faced samples, here I come!!! :) Hmm, I think I'mm be perusing Sally's projects for inspiration!

As of this morning the conference is now over and what a fabulous conference it was.  Check out the great pictures on our WGM facebook page.  Unbelievable fashion show on Friday evening!  https://www.facebook.com/weaversguildmn

As today is father's day, the focus was on Oliver. TAJ and I accompanied him out to the workshop, where he is restoring a rocker. :)

I did manage to get started on warping my next damask project. I'll need to rewatch Becky Ashden's video, so I can double check my loom adjustments, but I am really excited to get weaving on it too. I probably will do a bit more weaving on my texture sample this evening.

sally orgren

It was mostly work, but I did pull a sample and wet finished it for the Complex Weavers Early Manuscript group. Can't wait to weave this off, one shuttle, simple treadling, so it should go fast. ( Famous last words!)

Diane, thanks for sharing the link. WOW!

combing woolCombing WoolThis is my next ongoing loom project.  Washed yesterday 4 fleeces and today began combing them for the October event called Spinzilla.  I will get all this fiber ready for the October event and then, when it is all spun, or done before the time runs out, all this yarn goes on Mr. Putney the floor loom.  It will take most of this summer to comb it all but, I intend to do it all.  I have time time now that work is no more for me.  It is all shetland sheep wool.  It will be spun in two lace weight singles and then plyed to make a fingering weight that will fit a 12 dent reed as that is the reed I have for Mr. Putney right now.  I have Sara Lamb's video on Spinning To Weave and I will watch it again here shortly.

Big project.  Glad to do it!

I'm a newer lurking member :) ... I'm a spinner, I raise Giant Angora & French Angora Rabbits.  5 or so of my 15 need clipped.hmmmmph....

I'm working on the 2nd 8oz of Giant Angora on my 2nd bobbin, I have 2 oz or so to go.  I'll Ply for a week then!  And the nuts... 2 kinds... I have to find where my son put my 5 bu of black walnuts in the garage... for dying and eating.

And the weaving part,  I found a box of square nuts from my Old Neighbors basement.  A cigar box full, to finish tighting up my newly acquired (it hasn't been a year) Newcomb Studio Loom. Some wiggled off, as we took it apart, moved it, moved it again & finally put it back together.

It is a 4 head, 6 treadle loom.  I'm trying to wrap my head around the patterns for it... I still don't get it.  2x2, 4x4, 8x8 I understand, but the 4x6 makes my head spin... ha ahha hahaaaaa.

Anyone with guidance and encouragement would be appreciated.  It has ~12 yards, full-width cotton (2 color) warp. I had to cut it to move it, so IDK quite where to start?  Anything for fun, nothing complex

Thanks for listening.  (spinning & nuts) ha hah a haaaa....

I have so many to wash, IDK why. LOL   It looks like you use your bunny playpens, just like I do, when it's time to dry wool!

Good Luck to you.

4 more shows for me this fall, and 6 spinning classes...

Hi Sally,

Since you missed this one, you might want to attend in two years.  It will be in Indianapolis.

The conference was very good, with many more advanced classes, including one at a shop called Color Crossing.  Patty had a drawloom set up for weavers to try, as well as shaft switching and many other more advanced weaves.  This was an excellent opportunity for weavers to understand these looms and what they can do.  Now we have three Standard Glimakra looms to pack and send to her.

Joanne

Erica J

I'm back to my taquete, weaving a second sample after fixing an error I found while weaving the first pattern. I put two packing sticks in between the first sampling bit and this second sample. This seems to have provided a much more firm header, which I assume is the only difference between the first bit of sampling, where parts of the warp can be seen, and this second bit where the wefts are adequately covering the warp ends! Yeah!

BJR, I would love to see some folks combine Spinzilla and Halloweave and use the rest of October to weave with what they spun during Spinzilla! What do you think?!

sally orgren

Midwest has been on my radar for awhile now, and gee, Indy could be driveable! I didn't realize there were well-over 300 attendees this summer at Midwest-that's big for a regional conference! (I hope everyone gave big thanks to the volunteers who coordinated a conference of this size.) We all love these gatherings a bunch, but often times don't realize all the work that went into them.

I got to see some photos from the Textile Center of Small Expressions (still on exhibit until July 4th in their gallery), and received some email snippets from friends who attended. As always, it sounds like there was great stuff to see and do, and the networking was the best part.

I'll bet those 3 new loom owners were giddy when they left the conference, in high anticipation of their looms arriving.

Artistry

Midwest in Indianapolis?! That's only 100 miles away! You can count me in , that's for sure.

no Weaverliness today , laundry and packing because tomorrow we go to Croatia! I'll be looking for bobbin lace, and a very old kind of lace that they used to use on coverlets and costumes. If I am able to do it, I will take pictures on my I phone and see if I can post them here!

Joanne Hall

The conference was planned for 400 participants.  They got that many a couple months ago and closed the registration.

Yes, there were many volunteers and they worked hard.  We gave a donation to the guild, as we appreciated the help they gave us.

I love the concept of a tapestry diary, but tapesty and I have yet to start up a true love affair. I'm not ruling it out mind!

I have started a love affair with weft faced weaves and am considering my weft faced samples as a weft faced diary. Today I completed the first pattern on my weft faced plain weave sample. Yes, I know this sounds just like tapestry right?! Well this is a continous weft technique, where you create the pattern by controling the order in which the colors occur. So I just did a series of checks by doing 8 picks in the order blue, purple. Then the next 8 picks in order purple blue. I intend for this sample to go in my certificate portfolio for submission, so I sadly probably will not be posting many photos, but you can see this and many other techniques in Nancy Hoskins Tabby to Taquete. So my plan to stay on top of my weft faced studies, is to do one pattern each day I'm home, just like you do on a tapestry diary. So I hope those long time tapestry diary practioners will not mind me sort of taking up the band wagon in a different technique! They are all so lovely, I'm sure they'll be keen to see me participate in a similar daily practice!

Cathie, we'll only be a few hours off in terms of time while you are in Croatia! We'll still be quite far apart, you know if you are ever in the UK we have to meet in person! Have a great trip!

My weaverliness for today is chocolate! I did my annual "Chocolates for Charity" campaign yesterday, asking people to donate $100 to the American Textile History Museum in exchange for a box of my chocolates when I make them in late November. I had 30 boxes available and they SOLD OUT IN EIGHT HOURS!! (Plus one extra for a friend who was too late, but begged me to squeeze him in.) That raised a total of $6500 for the American Textile History Museum - $3100 in donations, $3100 in matching grants, and another $300 in corporate matching donations.

So I am feeling pretty happy today. Eight hours! That's a new record for me. Last year I had twenty boxes and they took 21 hours to sell out. So quite a jump in popularity. :-) And it raised a lot of money for the museum, which is even better.

Artistry

At the airport:)

tien you're amazing! I'm not surprised your chocolates sold out so fast they look and sound so yummy!

Erica, I think the Diary can be for all disciplines. I've done sketching with great success and enjoyment plus one most always put in committment. So your weft faced weaving sounds perfect. The important thing is to Show Up and Do It. You'll be amazed the places it takes you.

we are going to the Fife area in Scotland in the Fall. Up by the Tays estuary not far from St. Andrews. Are you close, where you are in England? I know we're N. Scotland, would love to see you!

bjr1957

Spent this morning up until about an hour ago combing more shetland fiber.  The name of the sheep was Lavender and she lived in Wisconsin.  Her fleece is a bit matted and full of veg matter as she had escaped from her pen and had to be hunted down.  It is a bit of a chore to comb but her fleece is so soft and beautiful.  Much of her fleece was damaged and had to be severly skirted.  It is the 2nd smallest of the 4 fleeces I have.  The smallest is the black lamb's wool.

This will spin up to a very nice laceweight and ply into a fingering weight for the floor loom.

bjr1957

When does all this have to be done and what kind are you making?  It sound...delicious!  How do the folks get their boxes?  I think people are much more interested in something made by hand and done so here in the USA.  I make liquid soap and it is amazing how folks really want something authentic, from scratch and made at home.

Congrats on the sale!!  Yeah Tien!

Hi OldHaus...

Do you teach classes (spinning)?  There is a publication that helps new weavers written by Jean Scorgie called Weaving Craft.  She has many of her past issues on her website and is about to end production of this publication.  She has been an invaluable help in my learning to undestand weave structure, terms, and just basic weaving information and techniques.  She can be reached via email at [email protected].  Write her and ask her some questions.  She is glad to help.

I have noticed spinning to be a topic many weavers here are trying their skills at. After acquiring two! spinning wheels in the past year I have had fun experimenting with them but don't have the confidence to use the yarn as warp yet. I have found the videos from Craft Daily (subscription) to be very good and reasonably priced spinning lessons. I will be interested in seeing your blanket Tien.

Erica J

We're in the process of adding shrinkage calculations to the new website. I hope you find this exciting news. I know I recently read an article about properly calcukating shrinkage and using it correctly to plan, but I can't remember where. I'm hoping someone here read the same article and has a better memory!

Gee Whiz, do you get a family discount from one of the airlines?

My travel agenda isn't nearly so robust, although Scotland may be in the forecast for next year, and it looks like Boise might be more immediately pending.

I mean, c'mon. I'm from Iowa. How many times have I said that, and someone will say "Oh, you mean the potato state?" or my favorite, "I've been there–that's where Cleveland is, right?" ;-)

endorph

the spinning theme - I have finally plied my weft and got my RH warped. The solid orange will be the hemmed edge of the tote bag so the ppi is fairly tight. I did a lousy job spreading the warp but it will work! NOw to get the weft wet finished and ready to start weaving the fabric for the bag proper.

Sally,

ROFL, and I get Cincinnati, isn't that where the flying pigs are? Ha ha!

Ed is retired and all he wants to do is travel and my family is all out of town so between the two we're always on the go. Fine by me, but plays havoc on my weaving!!!!!!!

Cathie from Croatia, so beautiful

I say go for it. I'm not the travelling type myself. But see all you can see while your healthy and active. :)

That can't be right, Sally. I'm pretty certain that Cleveland is in Mississippi. Or maybe Croatia. ;-)
