The month snuck up on me - where did June go. I am off on vacation this month - well two weeks of the month - so much of my weaverluness will be limited to watching what you do and playing with yarn. I am planning vivistes to several yarn shops along the way! Weave on all. . . .

Canada Day - and I'm dealing with...stuff...you know, the kind of 'stuff' that needs to be done but isn't particularly pleasing or enjoyable.  I'm hoping to at least finish off the place mat warp on the small loom, but we'll see.

cheers,

Laura

Sorry to hear that Laura! I didn't do any weaving either, but that is because we went to Camber Sands Beach and Bodi Castle today. It is our last night in the yurt. One more castle tomorrow, then home. I realized today that we are booked to go to Ireland next Wednesday. So I need to get an inkle or rigid heddle warp set up, so I have something to weave while there!

I look forward to seeing what everyone else finished in June (I started an FO thread in the group) and what you all weave this month!

I'm out here arranging the customs paperwork for my TC-2 jacquard loom, which was scheduled to ship on Friday but looks like it may have to ship next week due to the need to complete said paperwork first.

I'm also debating a matter of great import - what to name the loom. I've been saying for years that I was going to name her "Ada", after Ada, Countess of Lovelace, who is generally credited with having written the first computer program. This would be in line with my two previous looms - the current one is Emmy, after Emmy Noether, whom Einstein described as "the most important woman in the history of mathematics", and the previous one was Sophie, after famous female mathematicians Sophie Germain and Sofia Kovalvskaya.

However, a day or two ago, as I was dealing with custom paperwork for the sea voyage, I thought, "Hmm, a Norwegian loom sailing the seven seas to land at my doorstep? I think it must be a VIKING loom!" So now I'm thinking about naming it "Valkyrie". You know, immortal battle maidens choosing slain heroes to enter Heaven, Wagnerian opera, and so on. It's a name full of drama and excitement, which "Ada" (to me) isn't. So it's awfully tempting.

Which name would you choose, and why? :-)

liking Valkyrie - I like the idea of a battle maiden as a loom! And while I like the name Ada I am just not feeling it for this. . . .

friend came and gave me a hand so I was able to finish the mat warp, cut and serge it and even get it wet finished.  Doug will go pressing tomorrow.  Trying very hard to declutter the house because company is arriving next week.  Mary and I will play with fibre and sight see.  And celebrate my birthday...I will officially be an old fart.  ;)

Cheers

so this isn't weaving but it is one of the projects that has been keeping me away from the loom!.It is a silk and cotton blend.

Tien , Valkyrie most def. does it for me, I can imagine shouting Valkyrie! like Eureka ! When I make an important discovery, love it!

So excited for you:)

I'd go for Valkyrie, any time :) I hope the extra paperwork won't delay the shipping too long.

The last days I've been browsing the internet for yarn for the first project on the loom I've ordered. (It'll probably arrive next week, yey!) I found some Peruvian alpaca that seems to be quite a bang for the buck and not to low quality in a "lighter" sport weight (1660 Yds/Lb) that costs approx $30 per 0,55 lb including Swedish sale tax, that is rather high. 25% for anything but food and literature that is lower, and alcohol at 40%.

Have a nice evening! /Lisa

Sue in VT

Well, I finished a warp of two baby blankets in my first ever shadow weave, fixed a couple of floats, wet finished, THEN noticed a stripe in warp caused by two whites, two lavenders (instead of one of each) which created stripes, then needle wove INCORRECTLY and made it a more pronounced error!  I just don't really understand the skeleton of that weave, and so went over, under.....which was wrong.  SO, they're not to be baby blankets, but hang in the guest bathroom as a pair of nifty guest towels, and the error is folded to the inside.  now I've rewarped the pattern CAREFULLY.  Since its been raining all week, it didn't feel so bad!

laurafry

back at the AVL today.  Not sure why the photo is displaying upside down, but...

cheers

The Kromski Harp 32" arrived yesterday and I spent the evening assembling it. Had to try it out, too, with some of my yarn stash from earlier band weaving projects.

Today I'm off the weave and on a day trip to the mountain cabin. /Lisa

I wove off the last of the tablet sample warp! Did I mention Egyptian diagonals are much cooler than I thought they would be. Talk about weaving magic!

Oliver is making band looms to sell at an event later this month.

It's 4th of July, though I don't think the vast majority of the UK know that. :) We are having a BBQ with many American and English friends coming over. So I doubt much weaving will actually occur today.

Happy 4th to fellow Americans and happy Saturday to everyone else!

First picture shows finished towels, second picture shows the cloth on the loom...and the very obvious reed marks (which should pretty much disappear during wet finishing...

doing the dreaded hemming of towels - still have a stack to finish along with a bread cloth or two and couple of runners  and some other odds and ends of things. I hate hemming but love the finished product.

Spent most of the last three days working on the book - adding photos and finished bios, writing the missing sections (acknowledgments, preface, etc.), redoing all the examples in the visual design section. I also drafted bios for tapestry weavers Archie Brennan and Susan Martin Maffei based on their C.V.s - Holy cow! Did you know that Archie Brennan was named an Officer of the British Empire for his contributions to the art of tapestry weaving? That was amazing to me.

Plan for tomorrow is to work on my photo captions, bibliography, and so on. The really unsexy, tedious stuff that nonetheless has to be done. I'm trying to finalize the manuscript by end of next week so I can get it into the publisher's format by the end of July. It's due August 1.

So no weaving for me until all that is done. It may be awhile...

On my way home.. Stopped in Frankfort last night, had a fantastic meal, now off to the airport, for the last two flights home:)

i have Huck lace samples waiting for me until weds.

laura, your greens are just yummy!

I got the first pattern on my next weft faced diary sample done yesterday.  I thought I had picked grest colours, but this is so noy my forte. The colours look great together, but do not contrast enough to really show off the pattern. Oh well it is a diary and a samole, so I'll keeptrying samples and better train my eye.

I also need to finish my article for the Complex Weavers' Designing Fabrics Study Group! Fortunately, Tien in our fearless leader and I know she won't mind me taking a few more days!

laurafry

Managed to get up 'early' (for me!) and wove 1.5 towels, then cut off 9 from the cloth storage roller, cut and serged them, wound more bobbins so they can 'soak' in the humidor (I'm weaving with a linen weft and they really do behave better if their humidity is higher).  Now to get back to the loom and see if I can continue this productive streak.  :)

cheers,

Laura

fighting procrastination!

I did a small scarf with really wooly rest yarn yesterday, trying out the loom. Must say it was a pita getting the warp tension even when it was so stretchy yarn and the petrol was a bit thicker and fluffy even though it was stated to be the same distance/weight. And probably a bit too thick for the shuttle size as it turned out quite dense.

Now off to the mountain cabin again, this time with friends from south of Sweden. Have a great start of the week everyone!

Laura, the towels are lovely. I especially like the pattern in the last one :)

Yesterday I spent the day at the Sisters' Fiber Arts Stroll held every year a week before the Sisters' Quilt Show.  This was the first year I was a demonstrator.  I had a lot of fun talking to people.  There's a photo of me on the facebook page.

Not a great photo, taken with my iPad.  Wet finished but not pressed.  The reed marks disappeared in the wet finishing. .:)

I wove more on my diary sam p le #2 yesterday and made the warp for the tablet wezving I am taking to Ireland, 2 colour Alpaca-silk blend! We take the ferry to Ireland tomorrow.

I am also pondering what is boundweave? Nancy Arthur Hoskins defines it as a weft faced weave on a point draft, but Clothilde Barrett's boindweave book seems to define it as any weft faced, continous weft weave other than plain weave. What are your thoughts?

first surgery tomorrow , I'm ready and confident! If I can think Huck lace, I will!

Good luck, Cathie!!! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. Here's to a smooth surgery and a quick recovery!

Thanks Tien, figures I'd wake up early ,lol!

ReedGuy

Good luck with surgury Cathie.

I just ordered Hella Skowronski's monograph "Doup Leno: A Quick and Simple System for Weaving Loom-Controlled Leno"

Erica J

It's probably early yet, but I'm thinking of you Cathie! I'm currently on a ferry to Ireland. We're visiting friends in Co. Offaly and doing a bit of Medieval re-enactment. I worked on the redevelopment on the drive and did not get my tablet weaving warped. So it is hand seeing for me for the next 3 hours. ;)

sally orgren

I hope you had someone give us a thumbs up when you are out of surgery. I am sure many of us have been thinking about you today.

Tien!

I like Ada for your new loom!  She is a smart girl your loom and Ada was a very smart woman!!

Been combing wool in prep for Spinzilla for the loom.  Got huck lace on the mind for another set of towels and now want to warp my Kromski and do a quick rug for the back door using clasped weft technique.  Got weaving on my mind!!

Go Tien!  You are a smart girl too!

Hi Lisa,

I too have a Kromski 32 inch.  It is an older one that had the plastic ratchet and pawls.  I replaced them with the new magnetic parts and the tension works so much better now.

How did you like the loom?  I saw the scarf you did as a test.

My friend arrived, only a few minutes late.  :)  Tomorrow we will work on getting a tea towel warp onto the small loom so she can weave on that while I work on the AVL.  As soon as that blue/green warp comes off I will dress the loom with a nice neutral warp so she can see how sectional beaming works.  And maybe have a go at that loom, too.  In return, she's going to give me spinning tutorials.  Win-Win!  :D

cheers,

Laura

Erica J

I finished warping up the 30 card tablet woven band samples I will be doing while in Ireland. We are off to a Medieval event later today. I plan to shoot in the archery tonight. Tomorrow, I'll be keeping an eye on TJ and weaving away. And then there is the 1.5 hour drive to the ferry and the 1.5 hour on the ferry on Sunday. Plus the 5 hour drive home.

Part one surgery is done, came home last night. YAY!  Get to recover for a few days , Part Two surgery is Monday, Bring It On!  :)

thanks for for the well wishes I can feel the good vibes from here:) Cathie

Well they never stole your personality, so that's a good sign. ;)

Yay!! Best wishes for a good weekend for you and a smooth second surgery.

Not much weaving happening - yet.  :)  Mary is designing a tea towel using the Fibonacci sequence and then she can wind a warp and dress the small loom.  I'm running off class handouts for the spinning workshop on the weekend, and hope to get to the AVL later this afternoon.  Mary has been helping hem place mats and the bucket is almost empty.  I need to weave more (especially while I have a hemming elf!)  :)

cheers,

Laura

laurafry

Today Mary got a tutorial on using Fibonacci to design stripes, designed a striped tea towel, then wound the warp.  While she was doing that I got a few more tea towels woven.

The guild room is pretty much ready for the spinning workshop tomorrow.  I was hoping to finish weaving the towels and get the next warp on the loom but I also have to prepare a Power Point presentation (webinar) and best get that done on Monday.  Deadline looms!

cheers,

Laura

My TC-2 loom, packed and ready to ship. The woman in the photo is Vibeke Vestby, the driving force behind the TC-2's development and head of Digital Weaving Norway. Thanks, Vibeke!

Yeah, she's a lot of loom! Hopefully I should be able to fit her in with the AVL, though. I'm putting both looms onto leveling casters to make them easy to move around. That way I can rearrange them if I need to.

bjr1957

Where is TC going to live in at your place?  That looks like it would take up ALL of my living room!

bjr

tien (not verified)

The garage. Which she is (at least in theory) going to share with Emmy, my 48", 40-shaft AVL loom. I have no idea how the two will get along as roommates - whether they'll both fit amicably or whether they'll declare "There can be only one!" But I'm planning to put both onto leveling casters, which can function either as legs or wheels, so I can fiddle with the arrangement until I find something workable.

But yeah, she would take up an entire living room. It's going to be a squeeze to get them both into the garage!

debmcclintock

Tien, what about expanding your garage?

sally orgren

What a spectacular conference! I was just a day visitor, but they really roll out the welcome mat, and there is so much you can see, even if you don't take any workshops. The Campus Center (photo above) exhibits were wonderful, well lit, and well displayed. The vendors were also sprinkled throughout the building. There were 14 guilds participating in the guild table exhibit at the library (photo below).

It was really fun to finally put some faces with weaver's names, many of them weavers whose work I have admired for years.

Erica J

What e xciting thjngs going on for everyone!

We were not camping on our trip to Ireland and were surrounded by friends we had not seen for ages! So I only got a wee bit of weaving done. I got the next tablet warp on, using new cardboard tablets from Handweavers. I started a double faced sample with a simple diamond pattern, so I could weave and chat! I also started plannjng a new class and several new projects!
