I've got a few questions for those who are members of their Kingdom/Principality/Barony's Fiber Guild. I'm currently the MoAS for the Crown Principality of Insulae Draconis. As we prepare to enter a new realm, as a full Principality, I want to focus my time on promoting our Fiber Interest Group. I will step down as MoAS at our first Coronet Tournament. When I do that I will be putting all my newly foudn time into promoting and nurturing our Fiber Interest Group. We started this group about 2 years ago, and have had some success. So my questions are as follows:

Why did you join your fiber guild?

How focused is your fiber guild? Is is focused on needle work, weaving, spinng, or a general fiber guild?

What do you expect to "get" from your fiber guild?

Do you enjoy participating in guild challenges?

Do you enjoy participating in guild projects?

Were you recruited into the guild? If so how!

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to answer any or all of these questions. I know your answers will help me focus my own efforts!

Happy weaving,

Hi there Jeanne-Marie from the Kingdom of the Outlands,

First, I just wanted to say that our fiber guild is not a Kingdom run, sponsored or organized guild as I have heard some Kingdoms have.

Why did you join your fiber guild? At it's inception there were a few fiber enthusiasts who wanted to pool our knowledge and share ideas.  The sense of community with other like minded folks.

How focused is your fiber guild? Is is focused on needle work, weaving, spinng, or a general fiber guild? We are focused on spinning and weaving but have also done classes in nalbinding, felting, sprang, and  finger loop braiding.

What do you expect to "get" from your fiber guild? Inspiration, knowledge and community.

Do you enjoy participating in guild challenges? We have not had any challenges

Do you enjoy participating in guild projects?  Yes! every year at our midwinter events we always give a large pile of goods for largess.  We also did a project of napkins for head table at Coronation.  Here in the Outlands, all our landed Barons and Baroness' sit for feast.  So we needed 9 pairs and the only constraint was they had to be white.

Were you recruited into the guild? If so how!  I was not but we do hold demos at events and give out our yahoo group for them to see what we do.

Cool thanks so much for your answers they help a lot! I love the largesse project, will probably have to steal that for our first group project. We've got our first Coronet Tourney coming up, so how cool would it be to have a nice largesse basket to give to our first Prince and Princess! :)

Fair enough!  I think we stole it from Calontir so it is only fair for you top steal it from us.  Good Luck.  At our last meeting we discussed doing a series of towels in period weave structures, plain, twill, goose eye and a few others. We would have each person weave two towels for the project.  One would be for largess and one for them to keep but then do a large bit that could be cut into samples.  Enough for each member of the group.  Those would go into sample books.  We have been using the complex weaver's study group newsletters for some of the weaves structures as well as "woven into the earth".

Cheers

Cool, I love those resources. I'm forever wanting to participate in a Complex Weavers Sample Exchange, but with all my SCA related weavings, I never have time for that! I also love Woven into the Earth! I got to attend a lecture given by the author and her insight was amazing!

I think that there are a lot of cool things being done in the fibre communities, which is why I'm looking to other successful groups to see what works elsewhere! No use reinventing the wheel right?

Cheers,

Jahanara
