I've got a new to me Studio Loom.  Have the manual, but the one illustration is no help in putting this thing together!  I have a Union 2 harness that know what I'm doing with, but this is a 4 harness, so not sure there.   Also this thing was taken apart way more than it needed to be and I'm not quite sure how the brake and ratchet system goes together.   Add to that treadles and tie ups and I'm at a stand still :).  Anyone know of a detailed diagram to put this together, or does anyone have pics of a Newcomb Studio Loom that I can take a look at?

I put one of these "barn beauties" together without even a picture of the darn thing.  I eventually got a picture, but it still wasn't wonderful.  Try Janet Meany's Loom Manual Library http://weaversfriend.com/page1/page11/page11.html.  Boy what I  would have given to have just the picture she has on this web page!

I just bought a Studio Loom yesterday (for $100)! It needs a lot of tlc beginning with some cleaning. I am going to use tung oil instead of Murphy's oil soap as I am afraid of the water with such an old piece.
I wrote a note to the person at the above mentioned website and I am looking forward to a reply. I am glad I joined Weavolution. I look forward to posting about actual weaving projects!

Congratulations on your loom!  I have one as well.  I bought it, then found a great Schacht Mighty Wolf that I have been using instead, primarily because of the lighter weight and portability.  I plan on replacing all the heddles on my Newcomb as well as some of the other parts that are metal and rusty.  You can now get stainless steel which should last much longer.  I can't wait to get started on this loom!  I have several rugs I'm interested in working on.  

I look forward to hearing how you are coming along with your loom!

The pictures posted are of my loom, and it is a real work horse.  It was the first loom I ever bought way back in 1978, and I used it exclusively, until I acquired a Macomber about 5 years ago.  When we bought the loom, it had to be dismantled and taken out of a house, and I was convinced it would never work again.  We put it together, and I must confess, I didn't clean it like I should have, because I was so ready to put a warp on that loom!!.  There was one piece that we never found a home for-the loom worked fine without it.  Turned out to be a part of the back beam to stop it from jumping when you release the brake. Met another weaver-same loom,same piece with no idea where it went!!

Do enjoy your looms, it will weave anything you like.  I never did rugs, but have woven everything else on it including the linen transparency on my website (www.handweaver.us).

it is gorgeous. The placement and activity of the butterflies is lovely....like they're right there in the window. Truly an inspiration as I've been thinking of doing something with the long strands of plume grasses that I've been saving from the decorative grass I planted. It's too tempting to just toss!! Fine lea linen and the strands of grass w/seed head for weft. Hmmmm......

Coastalgal-Thank you for your kind comments.  I was not sure this would appeal, but I thoroughly enjoyed the weaving, and it went fairly fast or felt that was, as the picture was developing before your eyes.  

I think grasses and plumes would be lovely, just be careful where you hang it , as sun will make it brittle.  I have some fading issues on the back of mine, and it is in a shaded window.  Still, I have new designs in mind, just need to get to it...

There is usually an ad in the back of Handwoven magazine for a place that makes replacement parts for Newcomb Studio Looms. Thay also have original copies of the manual.

Is there anyone out there near eastern Iowa looking for a Studio Loom? I know where a couple are that need good homes. They are already partially taken apart, one more than the other, but I think all the pieces are there.

I am new here, been weaving for years but quite around four years ago and need to get back to it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. In Indiana.

Oh, I forgot to remind the new users that newcomb is 2 1/2 inch instead of the two inch on the Union loom between the pegs on the warp beam. I found this out the hard way the first time I warped it years ago.

Hi all,

I'm new to the world of weaving.  I recently acquired a Newcomb Studio Loom for the unbeatable price of Free!  I'm in the process of restoring it since it has spent the past many years in a garage gathering dust (and rust).  I've got all the pieces except one.  I've attached a photo(apologies for borrowing a photo) with  an arrow pointing to the part I need.  I'm not sure if it's a spring or what.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2nd generation…

Thanks to everyone for your comments the last couple of years.  These have already helped.  Finally getting to warp a Newcomb 4 harness Studio Loom from scratch.  Each of the harness' have a different number of heddles in between the support hooks with heddles 1 & 4 having the least.  Thought this was probably because they have the most pressure on them and more have broken over the years.  Also thought that I'd take the time now to move heddles from the outside and begin this process with all 4 harness' having the same number between the two supports.  What's everyone think of this plan?

Also - warp beam is broken.  Is Leslie at Riverside Looms in MI still the best bet for replacement parts?
