Hello everyone!

Sally O just posted, in the Daily Weaverliness group, photos of a Color Challenge that her guild just completed (comment #48). In the brief discussions thus far it has come up that we might do a similar challenge here on Weavolution. There are some options of handing out the "inspiration" colors virutally. However I am willing to consider maling out envelopes or handing out envelopes to those goign to Convergence. I am currently thinking starting this in August would be a good idea. Please let me know if this is of interest to you.

There are several on-line sources for generating color palattes, e.g. paletton.com.  I think you can make and share palattes - that might be easier than the snail mail ;)

Yeah, I'm glad several folks are interested. I will still leave this open, so other folks have a chance to  join us and will include this in our upcoming newsletter.

SusanBH, we would be leaving the challenge open for a year, so as not to make anyone feel under pressure to get their weaving done right away.

Queezle, Thanks for the suggestion of online palette generators. I am still considering that option. My two main "concerns" about that method is the way different monitors display colors and I know a lot of my local friends do not own printers. I would prefer everyone be able to easily have access to a physical copy, so they can use it in a variety of ways, such as in the photo how one person cut out windows in each color to use to match them. Even though I am in the UK, I do still mail a lot of thisngs back to the US and know that envelopes going First Class travel quite quickly.

We have 100 color cards for this Challenge. We will have tgese at Convergence and can start mailing to anyobe not attendibg Convergence. I can maje an online palette for people who want a digital palette!

Everyone who participates will get a color card, the guidelines I've set are that you can use 2 or all 3 colors on the card and can add as many other colors as you want. The rest is up to you. I hope that helps, if not hopefully getting your colors will help!

I haven't done a Weavolution challenge yet, and this one definitely speaks to me.  Like Queezl, I want to break out of my color shell, and this will hopefully help do that.  So when/where do I give you my mailing addy to get my sample card?

I was excited to read about the color challenge, and I immediately thaugt that I must be part of it. On reflection I find that color has always been important to me. It is what I think of before anything else. So I have to take the challenge. A few months ago I took a class on colors. It leftover me with the conclusion that I must do more of that. 

So - here I am.

Last year our guild had a year long challenge making mug rug/coasters to meet various color wheel criteria. The woven structure was mostly up to the individual although some were defined. Everyone wove enough mug rugs for their group plus one for the guild. The results were great.  I'll look forward to further exploring color with this challenge.

And bought 3 cones of yarn to start playing with.  Can't say I was thrilled with the color card I picked but quickly embraced it as a push out of my comfort zone.  It was a definite plus to be in front of so much yarn and place cones next to one another.  I'm definitely color-challenged!

I am also in the group that got color that is not one of my favorites, so this will push my challenge to work with colors not in my normal range also!  Which is very good!  Oliver handed me the envelopes, so this will be his fault if I fail miserably! Lol lol!!! Got to blame someone! ;)

Seriously, I also plan on doing a different type of project with this color challenge,  so I will do two at once!

I received my color challenge envelope at the Weavolution meeting at Convergence 2016.  I am reposting the colors I received here to be part of this conversation.  Oli held up the envelopes like a magician asking you to choose a card.  I opened the envelope while everyone created a drum roll and read, "How sweet it is, smile, and hugs and kisses." The colors are shades of blushing.  One matches the pink of the pads of my fingers.

Relatively neutral colors will let you unleash your imagination whether the color reads grey, brown, beige, taupe, or any pale flavor of white.  While I can't say I don't like my blush colors, they are holding me down to flesh.  

In 1979, I had my colors done on a trip to San Diego, CA.  The palette was called gentle and all of the colors came from my body--blue of my eyes, pink of my finger pads, brown of my hair, etc resulting in a palette of pastel colors.  The consultant doing the chart liked one color against my skin so well despite it breaking that she added it to the chart.  It was a nearly violette bright blue.  That color recurred in the chart I had done in the early 1990s, using the season approach.  My prior chart was more like spring with this chart falling in winter --that increasingly suited me as my hair turned grey.  In my youth, my go to neutral was navy but now I live in enough black to pass for an Italian widow who only owns black clothing.  As I type, perhaps the use of grey and the electric blue will revive my interest in blush although my heart belongs to bluer pinks like cerise/fuscia that hold the same intensity as the special blue. Perhaps adding teal will also increase my enthusiasm.

Colors.findthedata.com came up on search for pinks to fine tune my choice of color names just now--very interesting site to check out.

Grayed, muted greens. A color some fiber artists use regularly; a challenge for me. Experiments are sprouting in my brain lIke wild flowers. With so many ideas this is the time for me to try bookmarks.

The missing envelope. I watched the mailbox for a whole week. Michigan to Texas? Waited a day or two. Begged pathetically for another color card. It was not I wanted different colors. I never saw it. Really. Stared at the mailbox some more. This poor envelope arrived all crippled and crumpled, beaten and battered. We are doing an ancient craft. Perhaps, an ancient postal delivery was used - chariot, horse men, runners. I wonder?

I once did a shadow weave with the dark thread being a forest green, and the light thread a truly ugly puke light green, and the result was shockingly good.  When I get home I will post a photo for you.

Ten, I have woven a few things in greens and greys including Crackle weave placemats, taquette towels, and double weave on overshot patterning mug rugs.  Greens are big time "go to" colors for me.  

My color cards run from mango to butternut squash.  I have woven with some oranges but not a real lot.  This should be a great challenge for me to bring these colors together.  I have a couple of ideas of what way I want to go but I have not taken the time yet to check my stash for yarns.

BTW - mug rugs are a wonderful way to play with structure and different colors.

I got my cards on Monday.  The envelope looked like it had been through the wars, too, ten;  I guess the Post Office machinery just doesn't like them.  I got pale yellow greens.  It's not a palette I would usually use, but I had purchased some for dish towels where I want to go (slightly) outside of my usual color preferences.  I found that I have two of the three colors. The warp is already wound for this project, so I ought to be able to get to it before too long!  (Christmas presents need to come first, though.)

A tale of two greens

Here is the promised photo from my stash.  A mixed lot of mill ends had included a dull muddy pistachio color, and I used it with forrest green.  It was shocking that the color worked so well.  This was made 25 years ago or longer, and it was an early lesson in color.

Theresasc, my walls are painted a mango-squash yellow. You will be surprised how versatile it can be. Rug mugs might be easier and less expense since I have beaucoups experiments in mind and no remnants.

Queezle, those greens are stuning together. Reminds me to pick a color weave pattern to enhance a strong contrast and a darker color can take the place of black.

Susan, it will be interesting to see different ways we will use our greens. Go Green now has a new meaning at our house.

Green/blue. The lighter tone is almost pastel. Even though they are very much not my colors, it's fun to consider what to do with them to make something I love.

The mailman brought my envelope with my color card today.  No mashing of the envelope had occurred.  I really like my colors....yellow-ish to cream.  No idea what I'll weave yet, but I have plenty of time.  ;-)

Spectacular!  My colors arrived, and they couldn't be more horrid!  Though they are named Venetian Villa, Cashew Brittle, and Wedded Bliss, they are so far outside my wheelhouse that I would never consider them as sweet as cashew brittle, nor blissful.  OK, they are not horrid, and perhaps if I think of them as earthy colors, that will help.  This is a great challenge for me - exactly what I hoped for.  I think I will need to get out my color wheel and my thinking cap.Colour challenge queezle

i got my color card at convergence and was greatly amused when I found the same card at our local lumberyard.  You might also find the chip card you would receive in the mail at a local store.

Welcome to the challenge, glynruppemelnyk.  I think its going to be a lot of fun.  My colors are much more neutral than what I normally use, and I am trying to figure out how to make them look fresh and interesting.

KnitPicks.com has a sale on a yarn called Dishie. Cotton worsted, 190 yards, $2.99. Has anyone used it for weaving? Would it be a good bargain to get many colors for samplers? They do have one color from my Challenge Card.

I've ordered some yarns from knit picks.  I tried Galileo, which is lovely for a weft, and very soft, and I tried a couple weights of wool of the andes (too scratchy for next to skin for me).  For me, I decided it was an expensive way to go, because I didn't really have enough for a project, even a small one.  

If all you are doing is experiment, its probably OK.  But if you love a color you test, would you then look for a true weaving yarn in the same color?  Color matching is challenging.

For me, I have loved having 1 lb cones of many colors.  Even the "yucky" colors turn out to have important uses.  But I do have space for my yarn stash, and your situation is different from mine.

I prefer to use weaving yarn for weaving.  I use mostly cottons and there are so many colors available in different types of weaving cotton.  If you zre looking for small amounts, a number of vendors have pearl cottons in a number of sizes on mini cones.  When you get a bunch of those they look loke little jewels on the stash shelves:-)

Halcyon and Lunatic fringe mini cones give my stash a wide variety of colors in my small space stash. I suspect the color challenge will send me back to dyeloot at which point I will buy natural color(s) on large cones.
