I have this fascinating kit from Yarn Barn of Kansas to make hand warmers on the loom using double weave.  I am winding the warp and beaming it tomorrow.  I'll keep you posted as to my progress.

to take the plunge ino double weve again this year - I did it on my rigid heddle loom last year so this year I am going to give it a try on the floor loom. Nothing too ambitious since I have a bunch of other projects to tackle as well but at least a sampling of some sort.  Tina

To get everyone started, here is a free You Tube video by Jennifer Moore.  It is an excellent mini lesson on drafting! and weaving double weave!  You only need a 4 shaft loom to weave double weave. The video is here .

There is an article here on how to weave double width of your loom.

Today is the start of Halloweave, let us all know how or what you are doing.

I am unable to weave for this Halloweave, I will be traveling for business.  However, I am able to "virtual weave" with my weaving software.

I have a question about treadling with the kit I bought from Yarn Barn Kansas.  I would like to post it here but don't know how to do that.  How do you post a treadling draft?  It's rows and columns and I can do that in Word.  Is that how you get it into the comments?

You can just write the numbers of the tie-up and then the numbers of the treadles.  Or you can do a  print screen of the treadling,(cropping if necessary) save it as a jpeg to your desktop and then post it here as a photo.

Claudia, I don't know if you have Weavedesign (free) or something else to draft with. But whatever you use, you can get an snapshot of the screen with your draft. The built-in screen grab in windows is holding Ctrl and pressing PrtSC key to send it to the clipboard. Then just open up MS Paint or Photoshop or whatever you have for image software and make a "new" project, then paste (Ctrl-V), then crop the edges, save it as Jpeg. Now use the photo upload facility here by hitting the icon that looks like a tree to the right of the text formatting icons of the posting comment window. Hover over it and it says "Insert/edit image." Click. Then a window will open and you will see a field labled image url with browse button to the right. Hit that browse button and the forum opens another window that stores your images for you. Everyone has a user ID number "user####" in a directory tree. Hit the "upload" button up top of that window to select from your computer, the file you created. Then it loads and displays it in that window. Click it, and you return to the first window again and then hit "insert" button at the bottom of the window. Then it pastes it into your post window in the spot your text cursor was positioned.

This is a double weave draft for birdeye twill I will be weaving later.

I think the MacOS does a full screen capture with Apple-Shift-3, which is what the PC does. Or Apple-Shift-4 brings up cross hairs to outline (crop) a custom area of the screen. The images save to the desktop probably named as "Picture#" etc.

Actually, here it is now, I was having trouble inserting the photos so they wouldn't be blurry.  The draft was designed in Photoshop Elements, then transferred to my weaving software which is PCW.  Eventually I want to weave this draft into a scarf using Tencel yarn. The drafts show the front and back of the "fabric".

I have a wall hanging project I want to do for a Christmas present that I think needs to be done in double weave.  I was planning on weaving a sampler during October and now I get to do it along with a group, how fun!  I think I'm going to grab some black and orange yarns to keep with the holiday theme!

Thanks for asking Sharon. I wound a test warp and had calculated that I had enough yardage for one pair of mitts. I ran out of yarn and was 20 ends short. So, I measured and had wound the warp 7" too long. I unwound the warp and will rewind it tomorrow. I've been working on getting a 10 yd warp on my big loom to make 5 rugs. I was tying onto the front apron bar and found I had skipped a dent. Then, I found 3 threads had broken in the warping process (I do not like warping front to back) so I had to replace them and resley the reed for a 3rd time. I have been living among my looms in the basement for 4 straight days. Between winding the warp, sleying the reed, tying it onto the previous warp, beaming the warp and the past 2 days repairing the warp. So, the plan is to rewind the test warp on Monday. I will post my question on Monday because I am still uncertain about the treadling draft. That's my weaving week. How about you? Are you weaving along with us? Claudia

I am in the process of dressing my loom with the first doubleweave project, its going to be placemats I saw in Handwoven.  It was the first time I use 2 colors while winding the warp.  I made 3 chains but did not mark them so put them on the loom in the wrong order, so had to change that (but saved the cross) but then when double checking I found I mis counted so will have to add some more.  I will finish dressing the loom tomorrow.  I have been taking pictures along the way so will post them after I am completely done with warping.  This has been a learning curve. :)

I would enjoy participating.  a sub-group of my local Guild (Handweavers' Guild of CT) have planned to each make a doubleweave blanket this year. (our deadline is June 2013.)  i've been weaving for nine years.  iIn 2004, I made a doublewidth blanket out of mohair using a draft out of "Weavers' Craft" but haven't tried doubleweave again.  This time I hope to design it myself.  Still haven't decided on what fiber to use.  The mohair was difficult to put on the loom but was easy to weave with.  There was no sign of the fold after wet-finishing.  Claudia

Am starting over, long story but have managed to get a sample done and see how the double weave works.  I have new cotton that I ordered so will use this, will post pictures along the way, hopefully will get loom loaded by the weekend.  But this has been a real learning process, since I am using a finer thread that I am not use to working with and got into a tangled mess.

Well, a repeat of last year.  It is now the third week of Oct and I havent even warped my project.  Im still deciding on colors and trying to graph a pattern.  I may have to cave and use a pattern already drawn because my artistic ability stinks.  Not to mention that I havent started my annual cat rescue auction basket donation and the auction is on Sunday.  I do this every year - I have to change my habits.

my wimpy little sampler. Figured out pickup basics, got the stripes and tubular down, the only thing that I couldn't get to work out right was the double width. I followed the instructions but still didn't get it - figured it out on the RH loom but not on the four-shaft. Hmmmmmmm, will have to work on that soem more later. My time for double weave is over for now - too many other things to work on. . . . but it was fun.

It is closed on both sides and not into a tube! I tried twice following the instructions I had and both times the same result - I went slow checking carefully it looked like it would work but after a  couple of repeats no opening! So I decided I would try again later - I know I can do it on the RH so it should also work on the floor loom. . . maybe I need new instructions! Have too many other projects I need to get to so spend quality time on this. I did like doing the pick up - I will definitely be exploring that more in the near future.

I finished it in the car on the way to the auction.  I have cramps in my hands from doing it.  And it was kind of a let down because the only one who bid on it was the man who runs the rescue.  That audience has no clue and I will go back to making the cat beds for them.  A nantucket was way beyond their appreciation.

Hi Nancy,

Welcome back and congrats of all your weaving time!  That must be great.  I've done a bit of double weave - but I do not think there are any organized double weave groups at the moment.

You could consider joining our Mother's day monthly challenge, where many of us are making scarves (and its OK even if its for you, we welcome the company).  There is also a recently started color group, which would also welcome you, and I bet the double weave structure provides great insight into how colors work together.

I look forward to seeing photos of your scarf.
