I have a four harness, six treadle Hammett to restore, and wonder where I might find it's Model number?

You look at lots of pictures of other Hammetts.  Or you get the info from Janet Meany's loom manual library.  At one time all the 4 harness looms were #301 (1965).  Later (1973) they were described with these codes:

32" 4 harness, 6 treadle loom with shuttle race is 71363.  Without the shuttle race it is 71362.

45" 4 harness, 6 treadle loomis 71358, without the shuttle race, it's 71357.

The Hammetts are where I teach so I may get by there on Tuesdsay or Wednesday and snap a few pix.  I had a photo here at home, but I shot it sideways, and cannot figure out how to turn it rightside up!

This is a 20" weaving width with shuttle race... aprons have been added and sectional pins removed.

Have no idea what model number would be...

I recently acquired a J. L. Hammett, 4 harness, 4 treadle, 32 " weaving width (?). I searched the internet with little success to find more information about this loom. Found enough about counter balance looms to get it warped and usable. Have woven one rug so far, cotton warp 4 EPI, weft is dyed cotton loopers. Wove beatuifully and plan on using this loom for many more rugs of all types. Excited to see others here that know of them and own them. Any advice on using a counter balance loom would be much appreciated. Good luck on your resoration. Thanks Patricia

These looms are prized by rug weavers for their wide shed, solid construction and warp depth.  Just make sure you order a 5" tall reed.  The reed should be about the height of your heddle from the heddle bar to the heddle eye.

Unfortunately the 20" loom has shorter heddles and a smaller shed.

Just bought a 4 harness table loom (21inch) on ebay from a supposedly reputable seller.  All the metal is a bit rusty.  White vinegar?  Where would I buy metal replacement parts- which companies are compatible.

I have only used a new rigid heddle before.

How do I tell if it is a Hammett?

Where would I get an old manual?

Mechanism on top works somewhat but I am wondering if it is missing a spring because once the levers are down, you have to reach in the top

and move the entire mechanism so they can go back up.

help!

Can't tell what you have/need without a pix!  Although it sounds like a Structo, not a Hammett...

I also have a Hammett loom that I would like to learn more about.  My husband found it at a garage sale for $50. The people were moving and had to get rid of everything.  I haven't tried weaving on it yet but so far it seems like everything is clean and in working order.

The Structo looms had metal shaft frames, and other differences.  Your loom may have the beater on backwards, but otherwise looks fine.  You will need to add more apron ropes and get some tie-on bars, clean up the heddles and heddle bars and check to see that the pawls on both ratchets are not missing.

Hi, My name is Anne Copeland, and I live in Southern California not so far from Redlands. Some very kind people gave me an old loom which I discovered from the labels was a Hammett. Thanks to your good information, I have so far discovered (if I measured the harnesses correctly) that mine is the 45" one. I have never owned a loom before but have wanted one forever, and now I have this one. I am not sure about the shuttle race, as I have not looked for a photo of that so I can figure out what it is. This loom has been sitting in a garage, so I am starting to clean the wood. Another friend of mine does good woodworking, and said he would help me to replace the dowels that are broken. I have no instructions to put it together. Can I purchase some here once I figure out which model it is so that I can get it put together?  Also, I know how to clean the wood, but not sure how to clean the metal parts. They look as though they need cleaning too. I am so happy to find this group. I found there is a weaving guild in Redlands that meets monthly, and there is also a meetup.com group that meets to card or spin wool, dye it and weave or knit, etc.

I would send photos but I don't know how to send them from my computer. I found where to add an image, but it seems to only want one from a URL, and I don't have one to send them from.

I bought this 4 harness, 6 treadle loom from someone who was an OT at a hospital that eliminated weaving in their OT program.  It was dismantled to get it in my house (by my husband) and there are no instructions on how to get it back together properly.   Help, please!

Look at the photo above for general placement.  They used the same parts for their small looms as their large ones.  The Loom Manual Library has copies of the original instructions for Hammett looms.
