June is busting out all over! It was so nice to be in Wyoming and see actuall green fields and hills. many of the rivers and creeks are already bank full or over and there is still a ton of snow on the mountains. They need the water but I am afraid there will be bad flooding. The lilac bushes are in fjll bloom and smelling lovely as are the apple trees and the russion olives. Now that vacation is over I will be sticking close to home for a bit - no  ore time off accrued for a month or two and no money in the bank! So I am going to force myself to do some stash busting as well as get busy knitting baby booties, socks, hats, sweaters. I have four babies coming due this fall. . .  three boys and a girl! I am hoping for a productive summer. Looking forward to seeing all of your projects as well - you are all so inspiring - weave on!

One of my goals for my upcoming class at Peters Valley was to complete new samples as examples of some of the color theories we'll be studying.  I've written a bit about those studies in some of my last blog posts:

Congratulations Tien.  Come by our Glimakra booth and say hello so we can congratulate you in person.

Maybe because it is Friday, the 13th.

I had a task where I wanted to try and weave a bad selvedge for an example, and guess what? It took a lot more work and concentration than I expected! I think it's like trying to spin bumpy, inconsistent yarn after you have spent a long time learning to spin perfectly smooth and consistent yarn. Wow.

I certainly know it isn't a good camera that makes a good photographer, but the richness of color in your nature images is spectacular. So I have to ask, what kind of camera do you have, and do you do any color enhancement in Photoshop before posting? Your class is going to have a blast.

Thanks, Joanne. I'll definitely stop by at Convergence and say hi! :-)

Thanks, Sally! My photos since January have been with my iPhone 5s only! Just resize with Photoshop Elements, and sometimes adjust levels-- but that's pretty much it.

I had hoped the gray scale would be complete but when it dried I still need 1-2 skeins to bridge the lights to darker grays. Over all I'm pretty happy with it just have to nail the last two! Will post when done. Stroller blankets all done will photo and post:) Today I'm warping my smaller tap loom to get ready for the Tommye Scanlin workshop. So excited! I can't wait for all that color study:)

I went back to the original chain tie-ups on my Cranbrook and weaving is a dream!  I have huge, clean, flat sheds - everything that I have ever read that weaving on a counter-marche loom should be.  The shed is large enough that rug and ski shuttles are flying through without catching a single end.  The chains are a bit of a hassle to feed up through everything, but the way the loom is weaving, it is worth it.  I just wanted to share the thrill of victory:-)

I ordered some more wool quite some time ago. It finally came today. Just in time for me to do my sampling, before I leave for a month.

I will have to upload a picture later. I did get my sampling done and sent a photo to my friend for the final decision.

Two warps for shadow weave

Here are the two dyed warp for the shadow weave project. I was planning to beam them together, but then realized that if I beamed them onto two different warp beams, I'd be able to offset the color changes if I wanted to. So I'll beam them separately, I think. It will give me a chance to see if the second warp beam is working!

I also picked 18 pounds of boysenberries on Saturday (made seven pints of jam this morning), made three kinds of caramels and English toffee and covered everything (including me!) in chocolate, and spent some time visiting with fiber friends this weekend. It's been a busy time!

(And Sally, I *am* bringing chocolates to Complex Weavers after all! It was such a great idea that I am going to make little boxes containing 6 caramels and some English toffee - two of each of the three flavors of caramels - and will donate them to the Complexity fundraiser. I'll probably bring 10-15 boxes and suggest a donation of $10 apiece.)

I've been recovering from gallbladder surgery this month instead of a trip to see my son in Washington.   I am feeling better and begining to eye my loom.  The warp for my lace sampler is still on the warping board.  I have had time to watch many weaving videos on you tube.  I have also woven several small triangles on the 8" loom I bought for the drive up north.  Yesterday I started preparing roving for a spinning project that has also been on hold.  There is light at the end of the tunnel.

...to everyone heading east tomorrow! (That would be Tommye and Cathie B) It's been very hot and humid the last two days, but they are predicting a nice weekend!

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the surgery, I hope you recover quickly! Keep us posted on your weaving projects!

reading in here and on a couple of other weaving sites, I have been totally unweaverly for the past month - I have been spinning and knitting but no weaving. Thinking lots about weaving but. . . So nice to ome in here and see everyone's activity. Tien the warp looks great - and I think I gain weight just reading and dreaming about all the goodies you are cooking up!

Wow, Sally! Looks like you're getting to see some awesome stuff.

I'm trying to get up the nerve to cut off the color study warp. I don't want to finish weaving it off and it's standing in the way of doing what I want to do, but I put so much time into that @#*&! warp that I can't quite bring myself to cut it off either. It will probably take another few days for me to get up the nerve.

Meanwhile, I've started beaming half the shadow weave warp onto the bottom warp beam. Today I put the strings onto the sectional beam (I don't think that second beam had ever been used!), put the threads into the raddle, and have aligned half the threads. Tomorrow morning I'm hoping to get that warp beamed on.

I also have a new non-weaving project! I'm going to make a chocolate satellite. Specifically, I'm going to try replicating SkySat-2, the satellite my company is launching in a couple of weeks, in chocolate, for our launch party. I think that will be a lot of fun. I just ordered 40 lbs of chocolate for it! I anticipate lots of happy coworkers. :-)

Coming up for air! I 'm been immersed in color theory for 1. 1/2 days and just got to our looms yesterday afternoon! It has been great. We 'be done all sorts of excercise a on paper and paints and now I'm applying some experiments to the tapestry loom:) Tommye is great, of course!!! With only 3 students in the class it's great! Pix if I can figure out how on my I phone .

Guildmate Betty G and I visited Tommye and Cathie yesterday evening at Hill Top, the weaving studio at Peter's Valley. This looks to be an amazing class, and Tommye's tapestry color studies were incredibly informative and beautiful. Seeing the students' work and their color challenges was really fun. Cathie's not-so-fav color is one of my favs. Classmate Audrey and I are both challenged by the same color of salmon-peachy-pink. (So what is your color nemesis?)

I totally recognized the excitement on their faces when talking about what they had learned about color in this workshop. I had that same look on my face after Convergence 2002, when I took my first series of weaving color courses. Tommye's samples really showed the transformative nature of color in weaving, and everyone was excited to apply their newly acquired information.

After spending time in the studio, Cathie invited us back to the student residence. As we were talking in the living room there was the faint smell of woodsmoke lingering outside and the dull clang from the blacksmith shop in the background. Perfect ingredients for falling asleep — and then waking up to the sound of birds and another day of weaving. Lucky Cathie and her classmates!

Since Cathie hasn't been able to post from her phone, I took one token photo for now. I know she'll post more when she gets a chance. (Wait until you see what she's been weaving!)

And I am on my way to check Tommye's blog next...

We're on our whirlwind tour 4 states 4 weeks, visiting family and potential advertisers. I brought 2 spinning projects and 2 small sewing projects.

It looks like folks are having a great summer so far! I especially love reading about your weaving when away from my looms!

The best way to post photos on a mobile device is post to picasa or another webservice and use the link to the image. This works on Android, not sure about iPhone.

Erica-

Cathie / Tommye- the workshop looks amazing - Thanks for posting a photo Sally.

You all are so productive - you make me feel like a slacker! But I am spinning and knitting bunches - just no weaving at the moment.

Not much weaving here to report. I did get some Dacron polyester line backing (used on fly rod reels) to use as hand tied heddles for them opps moments. This line weight is 30 lbs. It is made my Orvis. The spool here holds 300 yards. :) I have used polyester line backing before many times, works great for me.

I have a heddle to switch out on a shaft, so I will show the new made tied heddle later. :)

Sally,

Thanks for posting the photo from the Peters Valley "For the Love of Color" class!  So nice that you and Betty dropped by.  The five days flew by as we immersed ourselves in color and tapestry.  It was a great group and I hope everyone will continue to color their tapestry world with joy!  In a few days I'll have time to do a blog post to show some photos.

Peters Valley is charming and I hope to go back for a class in the future.  In fact, Jen and I were talking about possibilty of 2016?!

Tommye

What a great place for a class!  The Peters Valley Crafts Center location is absolutely beautiful.  Cathie, such a pleasure to have you in the class. It was fun to see you again, Sally, and very nice to meet you, Betty--I hope I'll see all of you again in the future.  It's hard to believe that the class ended just four days ago--it seems such a long time ago when we were there, immersing ourselves in color, slapping at the bugs, and enjoying the plentiful food!  I've finally gotten time to make a blog post about the class; I have a Picasa slide show link at the post, if anyone wants to see some photos.
