Hi! I'm coming back to weaving after a bit of a hiatus and wondered what people here do with regards to a cone winder? (to wind hand dyed hanks onto) I have an old royal cone winder but am having a hard time finding any cones to fit it and other cone winder options look really pricey. I know people wind onto spools instead using a double ended bobbin winder - i have two singles ended ones (one for quills) and am a bit hesitant to buy another... I plan on using fine yarns so don't want the set up to be too makeshift either. Any ideas/equipment recs are appreciated!

What are you going to use these yarn packages for? Cones and bobbins do different things.  People who sectional warp generally use bobbins or tubes, people who wind warps like cones.  I don't know of a cheap cone winder.  Silver needles is the least expensive, at about $400.  I consider a cone winder to be essential, and have two Silver Needles, plus an electric bobbin winder.

Thank you Big White Sofa Dog! It'll be mainly to put yarn onto cones as storage for either warping or using as weft yarns. I am considering the silver needles one as my next loom related investment if I can't find/make cones for the Royal one I have. I'm glad for a recommendation for that one!

What size cones does this winder use?

Hi Michael - they are short squat little cones - the diameter at the bottom is about 1.75" and 1.25" at the top, though they are only 4" tall. All the card cones I have are a lot taller (which would be managable) but not quite wide enough at the bottom to sit on the winder. Thank you!

I have tappered cones that are 1.75" inside dia on the botton and 6.5" tall.

They are 1.125" outside dia on the top. $1 ea. if you think they will work I can send you a cone. Just pay the postage.
