I am beginning my first tapestry weaving the design sideways which requires mutiple colors in the heading as well as with the soumak edge used for turning. Can you give me some advice? Also if slits occur between colors do you sew these immediately?

EweniqueDesigns,

I'm not quite sure what you're asking about the heading... are you going to use the heading as a turn-back or hem?  If so, you might want to use a tone what will be an "average" of the many colors that might be the beginning of the actual tapestry rather than trying to use every color.

As far as the soumak, you could do a similar thing, or you could change the soumak yarn to more closely match the area that will be the immediate beginning of the tapestry design.  Just hitch off old and hitch on new yarn for the soumak at the point you want it to change.

About slit between colors, in the actual tapestry, I sew slits as I go rather than afterwards.  There's a wonderful description of three versions of sewing slits as you go written by Susan Maffei and available on the Archie Brennan and Susan Martin Maffei website.

If you're asking about in the turn back, I do use slits in the hem or turn back to give some ease to the turning.  I'm posting to my Tapestry Share blog about the turn back soon, in fact, since I have a piece that I'm working on finishing up now.  You might want to look for that at http://tapestryshare.blogspot.com in the near future.

I was asking about the hem that would be turned under and thank you for your response. I am not sure how to start and stop multiple colors in the soumak but trying different things. I read all your blogs and look forward to more on this subject when you post it. I especially enjoyed your postings on color and want to learn more about blending colors.
