Anyone planning to attend this year?

bolivian warmi

I'll be there with Claudia Segal and Janet Dykstra! I don't know on which day yet...maybe both?

I'm hoping to get there this year.  I've skipped the past few years due to back problems, but I've had surgery and can walk a bit now.  It will be a challenge, but I've sure missed going!  Unfortunately I have to work in Denver until that Friday, so I hope I have the energy to make it there - my stamina is pretty low.

Dyed Dreams (hand-dyed yarns; handwoven, knitted, and felted accessories) will be in their usual location--Barn 3, Booth 3.  Roz Houseknecht and I (Janet Stollnitz) have been dyeing lots of yarnas well as weaving, knitting, and felting.  Stop by to say hello.

Anyone up for a meet up?

We can make it 30 minutes, either day...Rabbit Barn?

Leslie M (not verified)

I'm planning on being there. Will have grand children in tow so met up is iffy. Will try though!

sally orgren

Saturday at 12:30 @ the rabbit barn? Bring your lunch, and the last thing you wove, if you can wear it or tote it in. I'll certainly bring Inky if Laverne is there.

We all know there will be a bazillion spinners and knitters there, but at these festivals, you can spot a weaver a MILE away when they have something HANDWOVEN on...

So, why not let the rest of the fiber community know we exist? (Or, as I like to say, if you *really* want to be radical, put the needles DOWN and pick UP the shuttle! ;-)

I am not sure on which day Claudia and Janet are planning to go but I would love to meet-up so do bring Inky! I'll be carting around my backstrap loom so look for the gal with sticks!

Erica

Sally,

Thank you so much for organizing this! We probably won't make MSW for several years, but love that a meet up will still happen this year.

I hope everyone has a great time. Please take pictures we can share in the Newsletter and on the site!

Cheers,

Erica

Anyone have suggestions for vendor stops? I know Claudia and Janet gave me some *excellent* recommendations last year!

I ordered the MS&W book back in December, but passed it along to a guildmate, so I don't have it for reference right now.

Let me know what you'll be checking out in the barns!

Is one of our Weavo members going to be running the loom auction again this year? If so, I'll stop by and say Hi! (There were some fantastic deals last year, people!)

rosearbor (not verified)

I'll stop by if I make it on Saturday.  I'm going to be looking at cardweaving and inkle looms.  I think the Spanish Peacock is going to be there.

bolivian warmi

Hurray. Claudia just confirmed that we will be there both days and so we can make the meet up. I will be looking for a spot where I can set up my backstrap loom. Maybe in the yurt again or maybe I will ask Mike from Spanish Peacock. I know he will be there...his place is always full of eager shoppers! I liked spending time at the stand with the ethnic textiles collection when I went in 2010. There was also a stand with textiles from the Ayacucho area of Peru. I hope that they will be there again.

Is anyone interested in meeting on Sunday, same time and place, for 30 minutes? I am thinking last year, some people only came on Sunday, and we missed them.

Let me know if you are interested in a second chance on Sunday!

sally orgren

Is anyone participating in this? I am considering it, at a guild mate's suggestion. (I am just a lowly drop spindler, any extra space at my house goes for looms, not wheels!)

I'm heading to the festival this year for the first time.  I y'all don't mind a "wannabe weaver", I'd love to stop by and introduce myself!  I'm not sure what the "rabbit barn" is, as I've never been to the festival.  Would I be able to recognize this from a festival map?  Thanks!

I'm coming down Friday night with some fiber buddies and will try to be at the rabbit barn on Saturday - possibly on Sunday, too. Can't wait to meet you all!

Virginia

When you enter the festival from the main gate, the rabbit barn is to your left. The information tent will be to your right, a few steps into the fairgrounds, if you need an anchor.

A few things to know... the rabbit barn is really more like a pavilion, with a roof, open sides, and some picnic tables inside (but no rabbits!)

Sally

So far, I think Deb is going to take the prize! (Anyone coming from farther away than Texas?)

Sally

sally orgren

Bring your fiber buddies too, Virginia!

I have been traveling for nearly 2 months now, so I have missed one of my guilds for 3 months in a row. I am starved for weaverly interactions.

Rosearbor, I hope you make it. Spanish Peacock was a recommendation for me last year. This year, I'll be using one of their drop spindles, spinning some of their fleece while at the festival. (By the way, I got there about 1:30 Saturday afternoon, and they were nearly sold out of drop spindles.) Maybe make a beeline over there if this is a "priority stop" for you.

bolivian warmi

Longest distance....Bolivia?

And Rodrick Owen is going to drop by too. He says that if it rains we will recognize him by his bowler hat and brolly!

Are there vendors at MDSW who carry coned yarn for weaving?  Unfortunately, I have to purchase all my weaving yarn by mail, which makes color selection tricky.

Roz Housknecht and I (Janet Stollnitz) vending as Dyed Dreams will be in our usual location, Barn 3, Booth 3, with a great selection of hand-dyed yarns as well as handwoven, felted, and hand-dyed accessories.  Stop by to say, "Hello." It's always nice to meet Weavo folks.

Janet

Stop by the meet up and we can point you to some of the weaving yarn vendors...

sally orgren

Domestic and International.

Deb is in the lead for domestic, and the quick estimate (as the crow flies) for Laverne is 3,872 miles/6230K, for Roderick 3,632 miles/5845K. Anyone else want to chime in?

debmcclintock

Nice to see everyone! We are heading back to the festival today. Must have a fried Twinkie and go thru all outside venders. Vender alert, lots of new venders down by the sheep herding demo field. Worth the walk. My favorite new equipment down there is the Pocket Wheel. Nice little portable wheel that reminds me of a recumbent bike. Spins nicely too, it is always fun to see new equipment. Safe travels to all on their way home!

sally orgren

Wow—the first day was a blast! The meet up was great. If you are coming today, we'll see you at the Rabbit Barn at 12:30.

sally orgren

We saw the debut of a new supported drop spindle by "True Creatives" at the spin in last night. They awarded prizes for the person who spun the longest length on a drop spindle and a wheel, but this woodturner created his own category immediately.

Every year I buy the 6 tickets for $5 from the 4H raffle near the main gate.  My niece and nephews were big in 4H and I like to support the program and the kids.

Well, another Festival is over now and I'm still waiting for the call telling me I've won a spinning wheel...

It was great meeting up with folks on Saturday.  I'm still wondering if anyone took home that Nadeau loom.

It was so great to see so many friends at the auction and out and about.  Maybe one of these years I'll be able to make the meetup, but auction comes first!!!

Sold the shawls from Sheep to Shawl this year, that was a total blast!!!  Some sold VERY well, $750 for the first place shawl!!!!

Purchased a new to me loom, must be crazy when they went so cheap at the auction, but I bought a used Purrington!  I love the action, it will be delivered on Tuesday!

Sally, working on those inkle ideas, hope to have a proto type within a month.

I had a wonderful time and it great to see everyone. How do 2 days go so fast? Thanks to Sally for organizing the get together. It was good to visit with so many Weavo friends. I walked my feet off and bought more than I need. I have a date Tuesday to clean the studio to make room for all the new stuff. I took a class in spinning with color with Maggie Casey. I learned so much and hope to find time for the spinning wheel soon. I had the chance to talk to some Weavo advertisers and visit with other Weavo fans. Good to see y'all. So glad we have MSWF annually. Happy weaving, Claudia

Although I am dog-tired today, it was INCREDIBLE this year!

This is the first time I have stayed for both days, and it was amazing. I wasn't so much into buying the fiber (like I don't have enough already?) but I relished the opportunity to put faces and names to avatars and projects here at Weavo. I had such a short turnaround on Friday from my flight home to hopping in the car to drive down, I completely forgot to bring or wear anything handwoven. Thankfully, people figured out who and where we were on both days. (No wabbits here, Elmer Fudd.)

Thanks to Deb for the tip about the lower area of vendors, as I ventured down on Sunday. Absolutely worth the trip just to see the work at the Ayni booth. (And just about everyone who came into the booth and saw the backstrap woven items referenced Laverne.)

Loomyladi is a *FANTASTIC* auctioneer! I sat in on the auction for a few of the shawls and was totally blown away. Not only is she knowledgeable about the products, but entertaining (if you aren't bidding), and she did an excellent job of reading the crowd when the bidding was happening.

In the 4H building, where the juried competitions were held, I was surprised and delighted to see projects that have been posted here at Weavolution. Many were more spectacular in person than you can imagine. (And yes, some were award winners — congratulations to Elizabeth Hill!) When she stopped by on Sunday, we learned she will be teaching deflected double weave at Convergence this summer. I saw at least three submissions by Elizabeth, and all were inspiring. Did anyone else submit? (Please let us know. If your avatar is different than your name, I may have recognized your project, but didn't have time to scroll through the bazillion projects posted here to connect the project to your avatar.)

Because I was staying overnight, my guildmates talked me into participating in the spin-in Saturday eve, 6-8. I am just a drop-spindler, no wheel. But during the gathering, they gave away random door prizes and had spinning contests, differentiated by drop spindle or wheel. I surprised myself by nearly beating my guildmate and fellow Weavo member ElisaE when I came within an inch of two of her length! (She probably spun something like 58" in 30 seconds on a drop spindle. And her yarn is always perfectly consistent, of course. ;-) However, we were both beaten by another participant, who had a *huge* wingspan. (If you were there and saw two people stand on their chairs in the front of the room at the 15 second mark, that was Elisa and me.) Andi, if you are just lurking and reading this, we are throwing down the challenge for next year...

Ok. The festival is over, and it's time to get busy and implement, right?

P.S. Sequel, just so you know, msthimble was pretty certain she was going to win that wheel, too. Does anyone know who actually won it?

P.S.S I echo Rosearbor, who got the Nadeau? (Because hey, I would like to come over and weave on it! ;-)

I missed the Sat. get-together, but made it on Sunday, and boy, was I happy to meet such wonderful Weavo friends in person.  My niece is still talking about getting an "Inky" of her own for her birthday after being inspired (and taught) by Sally and Rosearbor and Laverne.  Thank you!
