Greetings,

Have 20-harness 60"  AVL countermarche and the AVL wapring reel, it's breaking my brain figuring out sectional warping, but I'm getting it finally 8-)

Current project is a 34" wide linen diamond twill at 24 EPI, reproduction from a linen diamond twill found at Sutton Hoo.  After that, with the newly-arrived but not yet installed second beam, am looking forward to expanding my experience with pique' and multi-layered fabrics.

Question: are people using a tentsion box IN ADDITION to the AVL warping reel?  I've been going directly from reel to sectional beam.  Doing basically okay with tension, but wondering if I am missing a step???

Curiously,

- Nicolette

I have the 40S AVL A-Series and I experience the problem of shafts lifting for no reason.  The shafts aren't in the draft.  The shafts that are lifting are primarily the ones in the back when I'm working on the front several shafts.

[I wrote a far more extensive comment with lots of details but am limited to 1000 characters ]

Anyone else having this sort of trouble?

check the dobby box and make sure all your solenoids are properly-positioned and that none of the hooks on the shafts are catching on another.

I have that same loom and have had that happen more than once, and it's always in the dobby box.

There's also the AVL tech support resources.  Lucinda is GREAT at long-distance trouble-shooting.

I'm pretty new to the warping wheel (and sectional weaving), so I trust my technique will get better with more practice.  But now I'm running the bout of threads around one of the metal bars at the back and around the wooden support that holds the two arms together.  Works kind-of like lease sticks in warping a plain beam.  I use the sectional beam in the lower position, and after threading the bout around the bars, I tie it on and start winding -- but I sit on a low bench in front of the beam and guide it with my hands so all the threads get into the right slot and are spread evenly (adjusting the angle of the little reed on the arm of the warping wheel).  I learned the hard way that it DOES matter if a thread or two escapes its slot!  So far, this seems to be working well -- latest warp (my fourth) looks very good even about 6 yards into it. (15 yard warp,10/2 cotton in huck lace for towels.)

Hi Cath.  I think the problem with the posting is that all these posts are to the group rather than to the forum.  I thought that was to have been fixed, with the posts moved to the forum, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  I've reported it to the dev team to get a status on it but since it's a holiday weekend I may not hear anything right away.

We've used the warping wheel for several years in our tartan weaving business (www.stcroixweaving.com) but have had to modify it:

- the handle isn't well designed.  When it broke thru the back of the wheel I replaced it with a ball-bearing mounted tractor steering wheel knob from the local farm store!  Faster, smoother and indestructable.

- Since we use two sectional beams on our AVL to keep production going, we added a 'U' shaped door handle to the endpiece where the comb goes when you transfer to the beam.  It makes moving yarn to  the upper and lower beam easier and smoother.

The wheel is awesome tho - it cut our warpinng time in half.

Could you post pictures of your modifications?  Sounds interesting.

Also, I would like to make my wheel travel worthy.  Has anyone done that?  I'm thinking of cutting the long post and creating a wood or metal plate method of attaching the two parts.

 Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to get my 1981 12 harness folding AVL dobby loom up and running.  Has anyone had one of these?  I finally decided to figure out the dobby system only to find out I had only 16 bars and need 20 just to get started.  I put an ad in the forum.  Anyone happen to know where I might find the 12 peg dobby bars.  AVL does not have them or know how to make them.  The might make some for me when they get the specs, but I would love to get started soon, while I have time this summer.  I would also love any advice from someone who has used this model.

Thanks!

Please explain the function of the 'U' shaped door handle.

Pictures made it so much clearer.  Thanks!

I love the illustrative cones in the back ground.

You may want to try weaving with the 16 bars you have. I had a 36" 12H AVL Folding Mechanical Dobby and wove plain weave with 8 bars (or whatever was the minimum to fill the dobby wheel was). A woodworker may be able to make additional bars.

I have now tried all 16 bars.  The dobby unit is not advancing properly.  It can be advanced by hand.  The bars are connected in three different ways so I ordered the new linkage strips from AVL.  I will try those before experimenting farther.  I'm still hoping to find some used original bars that no one is currently using before having new ones made.

If you know who bought your loom, I would love a message (especially if they had extra bars!  : )   I'm trying to connect up current owners since the loom is rare and AVL is not fully supporting it. (Sounds like they are willing to make the new bars) I don't think anyone working there has even seen one.  I now know two other current owners (love the internet!) and they have had great tips for me.

Thanks!

The linkage strips from AVL are cable ties (see picture below) that you can buy from the hardware store (I ordered a set myself from AVL not knowing at the time what they were and that they could be bought locally).

Unfortunately I don't know who now owns the loom I had. The person I sold it to has resold it.

Do you have the loom manual? I have an electronic copy (it's a bit hard to read) if you are interested.

They have a new strip with holes in it.  They screw into the bars (up to 20 per strip).  they are to keep the spacing between the bars perfect.  http://shop.avlusa.com/parts/mechanical-dobby  Amazingly, a reasonable priced item from AVL.  Mine are being shipped.  I'll let the whole forum know if they are worth having

Thanks for the offer of the manual.  It took me months to find a copy through the internet.  I have a marginal scanned copy, but in the process of trying to find the bars, I found someone with a good copy that will scan me a good copy.

Thanks again for your help with my weaving project!

Ah, seems I was thinking of the dobby chain ties the dobby linkage strips do look helpfull.

Good luck with your weaving.

It makes it easier to thread onto the loom because we have 2 beams one above the other.
