Hi!  I'm Liz. I've been a weaver since my late teens but only sporadically. I'm now in my early forties, married with two daughters. I work out of the house full time, and have way too many interests and hobbies. I wish I had enough time to fill my house and clothe everyone in lovely handwoven fabrics.

Liz,

I'm your twin in NJ!

40's, married, work out of the house full time, and enough interests for a few lifetimes. I DO actually make it a priority to weave almost daily, because I have no commute and I don't have children under foot.

It is my hope this forum can bring out current textile things to see and do in the NYC metro area, or in the greater region that surrounds the city.

I am always game for a fiber adventure!

Hi...

I've been weaving ever since my baby was a year old and he's now 32! I recently retired from teaching middle school art in a suburb of Albany, NY.  My husband and I moved to Savannah, GA with our adorable little Portuguese Water Dog, Kizi (yes... an Obama dog... but we got her first!)  I sold everything before we moved (well, not EVERYTHING... I did keep a few of my favorite yarns).  So I had to start fresh in Savannah.  I found an 8 shaft Mighty Wolf and have been enjoying exploring more than 4.  So far I've tried several variations of a reverse twill.  My dream is to get a compu-dobby loom... we'll see...

Know any good yarn shops for weaving yarn?

School Products in Manhattan carries mill-end cones, but the supply has been getting sketchier in latter years. I'm gathering that is a problem everywhere.

The only thing saving me from haunting the AVL site for a used computer controlled loom is lack of space to put it in. I can just fit my 27" David. When the kids are grown and I have their bedrooms back - watch out!

Size is one thing holding me back... but cost is the big one.  I wish I could win the lottery -- but that's kind of unlikely since I don't buy lottery tickets!  Oh well... I'll just keep dreaming...

Hi!  I'm Christine.  I grew up in NYC (Queens to be exact).  I live near Philly now with my husband and two cats.  I was a Textile and Surface Design major at F.I.T. but didn't get into spinning and weaving until after I took a break from there.

Hi! I live in New Jersey (Maplewood) and am a beginning weaver. I have a 14" table loom. I'd love some ideas for good beginner projects.

scarves are, of course, the classic. Table runners and placemats and bags are also good. Can you sew?  At 14" you'd need to make your placemat in two strips.

You can also plan to sew sections of cloth together to make bigger items.  Also, if you have either 2 heddles or 4 harnesses depending on the loom you could also try double weave to get a wider cloth.

Thanks, ilane and Christine.

I was actually asking about patterns, as opposed to generic projects. Like, try the XX scarf in the YY book. In other words, I don't feel terribly creative right now, and would like someone else to do the brain-work for me! ;-)

Since I posted this, I bought some old issues of Handwoven on eBay, so I'm leafing through them now to get some ideas.

I'm not ready for double-weave - I've read that you can't make any mistakes or the fabric won't unfold correctly.
