I am going to be doing a huck lace in 10/2 cotton.  Before when doing lace I  used a loose sett.  I was just reading somewhere you should use plain weave sett as your guide line. Now I am not sure which to use. What do people use. Thanks Laurie

Generally you want an open plain weave sett rather than a loose sett.  People usually do huck in 10/2 cotton at 20-24 epi and ppi.  A really open sett (14-16 epi) can be good for transparencies, but is rather sleazy (not durable) for lace.

Thanks Laurie, I have done loose 20 at the most. It does depend on the pattern repeat. I worked on the planning yesterday and I will use 20. This is my first  lace in 10/2 cotton so I wasn't sure. Lauie

It also depends on the block size, amount of lace verses plain weave, and the effect you want.  Smaller blocks (3-thread instead of 5-thread) and a design with more plain weave can take a more open sett.   I like 20 with 10/2 but it requires a light touch.  Be sure to show us how it turns out :-)

The pattern I am going to do is a heart. The repeat for it is 33 threads. I will put 7 plain weave threads between hearts and do three across. I always like to put plain weave selvage threads in my lace warps. Lauire

That sounds pretty.  Is this the 3-thread pattern from Donna Muller's book?  Yes, the plain weave selvages and areas in the pattern parts will make it much easier to weave and keep the lace open.  I always use them, even if I fold them back in the finishing (to get a pattern that goes off the edges).

Yes Laurie it is from Donna Muller's book. I have found it a great resources. When I  started weaving I did 4 shaft huck lace and used it a lot. I am glad she has some 8 shaft lace pattern in there too. Laurie

I have the 10/2 on the loom for my lace heart. Now I am wondering about the reed. I have a 6 8 10 and 12 I can use. The problem is the sett is 20 epi, I know I need to keep the groups together so I need to thread it 3 ends in each dent in the reed. What one would work the best? I checked my resources and did not found anything that look right. Any ideas would be helpfull. Thanks Laurie

Laurie, I have woven a lot of 10/2 cotton lace at 20 epi and haven't had any problem with sleying 3-thread huck 2/dent as long as every one is 2/dent.  So, I would use the 10 dpi reed and expect that everything well settle out fine after you wash it.  If you prefer, you could up the sett to 24 epi and use 3/dent in the 8 dent reed and it would still be lacy.  The place where you run into more problems are some of the less regular sleys (2,2,2,1, for example) or an odd split in a reed with quite a few threads per dent (for example, using 4/dent in a 5 dpi reed for this project). Good luck!

Thanks Laurie, I already have the loom threaded. I will do the 2 per dent.

I started the weaving yesterday. The 2 per dent is working well. I did some sampling and than did a little of the scarf. I will post it when I get it done. Thanks again Laurie. Sorry you are not coming to Convergence I was hoping  two Laurie could meet up. Laurie

I finished the weaving and washed the scraf. I haven't put it on the web site yet. I washed it and wanted to wait until I had a picture of both before and after washing it. Should have it up in the next few days. Laurie
