My yarn order should arrive today and I have a HUGE question.  I am planning to make the dishtowels on page 67 of the Ashford Book of Rigid Heddle Weaving.  The yarn is to be doubled, which I interpret as 2 threads in each dent and 2 threads in each hole.  Correct?  Now, for the really complicated part (for me):  they use a 12.5 dent reed, thus will have 25 epi.  I have a 10 dent reed, so in order to get 25 epi I would need 5 extra threads in my inch.  Should I add an extra thread 5 times, evenly spaced out across the inch?  Should these 3rd threads only be in slots to avoid overcrowding in the holes?  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Eggplant Lady:

I'm not an expert by any means, so maybe wait and see if someone else replies, but if I were you with those choices I would just do the 2 ends in each slot and hole.  Forget trying to get to the 25 epi.  Yours will just be 20 epi.  Be sure and two strand your weft for the balance, and don't beat too tight.  Try to keep the cloth balanced looking.  When you finish it the weave will tighten up.  However, you may want to add an inch to the width of the towel, because it's going to allow for more shrinkage.  Hope this helps!

Good Luck,

Thank you Peggy.  That would be my preference.  I forgot to add that I will be using 8-2 cotton.  I would like to know if my reasoning is correct.

I used 8/2 cotton on my towels as well, but I was using the 12 dent heddle.  The finished cloth is dense.  I still think I would try it with the 10 dent heddle.  I think it just may cause the cloth to shrink more, so I would allow for shrinkage.  Let me know how works out, I would be interested to know.  I'm sure someone else will pop in to comment.  Also, there is a towel group and you might want to join that group and ask the same question.

Good Luck,
