Hi All.  I'm Edith and I am almost the owner of a Cranbrook 48" countermarche.  I bought it on Satuday and brought all of the pieces that would fit in my Rav4 home.  There are 3 large sections that I'll have to have delivered.  Then she will be mine and I only have to put her together.  eek.

What kind of dogs do you raise ellenspn?  my daughter and her SO raise American bull dogs they are beautiful. They are too big for me to handle but I would love to have one. I have a cat who thinks he is a dog so I guess that will be enough. lol.  Lois aka fibernut

Hallo to everybody!

My name is Susanne and I live in the northern part of Germany. Since 2005 I own my 8shaft Countermarch loom "Lilla" from Öxabäck, Sweden. I am looking forward to learn a lot in this group!

I don't.  I show in obedience, agility and flyball though.  My avatar is of my current loom dog, Roo who is an australian shepherd.  The shelties don't like the loom...too noisy for them.

I have an 8-shaft Glimakra Ideal.  I find it to be a versatile loom, but have difficulty getting good sheds on all eight shafts.  Perhaps the Ideal is a bit too shallow for 8 shafts.  Any suggestions?

I'm the proud owner of a used (late 1980's) Glimakra Standard, 8-shaft, 10-treadle loom.  I love weaving on this incredible "instrument" -- and am frankly impressed with myself for putting it together alone.  The parts fit beautifully, and my maiden voyage in tying everything up and weaving was smooth sailing.   The shed is incredible, big enough to drive a truck through, and the treadles are amazingly easy to depress.  (Can you tell I'm a happy camper?)   I look forward to learning helpful tips from others more experienced with countermarche looms, and with weaving in general.

Hello Everyone!

I have been weaving since 1996 and since 1998 on a Woolhouse Tools 45" 12 shaft countermarche with the floating lamms system.  I also have a Louet Spring 36" 12 shaft CM with parallel lamms ( same things as floating really....)

Both looms do essentially the same thing but both looms are quite different!

I look forward to our coming discussions on all our special looms.

I also have an 8-shaft Glimåkra ideal, but so far, I've only used 4 shafts. My next warp will be 8 shafts, and I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully someone else can give you some suggestions.

I have an 8-shaft Glimåkra, but I've only used 4 shafts so far. Ever since I first tried weaving with a countermarch, I understood how much fun weaving really can be. No more nasty sheds!

Some day, I hope to own an Öxabäck loom, they are simply a dream to weave on! I better start saving my money, or pray for a bargain on the second hand market.

I bought a used Louet Hollandia, four-shaft a few months ago.  Right now, I am taking a class on a Cranbrook to learn how to use my new loom. I'm making a shadow weave blanket. I can't wait to warp my own loom at home!

Hello all.  I recently sold my first loom (an 8 shaft Baby Wolf) and acquired a Louet Spring 110 (40 in.).  I haven't had much time to play with it yet, and am still trying to wrap my head around the specifics of this loom, so I will probably have lots of questions as I finally get time to spend at the loom in a couple of weeks.

Hi All!

I have a Thought Products Barbara V set up in CM mode and soon will have a Louet Delta at home.

Hello!  My loom is an Oxaback from Kinna, Sweden.  I bought it 20 years ago, and wove rag rugs and tablecloths on it.

Right now it is in the crawl space in pieces but I am hoping to set it up soon, and then I will have to re-learn how to tie it up!

I might need this group to help me because I remember that it seemed counter-intuitive.

Hi,  I've been weaving on a 48" Glimakra countermarche (10 shaft/12 treadle) loom since 1982.  In 1985 I purchased a used 44" Glimakra (10 shaft/10 treadle) single unit drawloom that I am getting ready to weave on again for the first time in 17 years or so.  Love both looms!

Hi Everyone, I have a new to me Gilmakra Standard 4 shaft, 6 treadle countermarch - she is a 110 cm loom which I am told by Joanne Hall is a size that has been very poplar and is no longer made.  Who knew, all I know is that I dreamed of owning a Gilmakra loom for the entire 8 years I have been weaving and never in a million years thought I would own one.  Well, for once I was lucky -- the right loom, the right price and the right time presented itself.  This loom is now sitting in my weaving studio in a place of honor - she is currently warped with her second warp and is weaving like butter!  Love this loom - the tie up is a bit of a pain and yes, I have looked at the Woolhouse 20+ tie up system - it is a bit pricy so I will continue the traditional tie method for now.  I am feeling very blessed to have this loom and look forward to years of weaving pleasure.

I'm going to look at a used Glimakra tomorrow and I'm SO excited. It's testimonials like yours that make it feel  right.

I wove on one at Vavstuga in Shelburne Falls, MA and it was love at first sight.

If this is the "one", I might need to ask questions about putting it together.

But it sounds like I probably won't. Nothing better than great design  :-)

Hi all!  I am fairly new to weaving, purchasing my first loom , a 4 shaft LeClerc Fanny (counterbalance),  in 2004, before I had ever woven.  I bought it used and figured if it turned out I did not like weaving afterall I could alway resell it for the price I paid.  I recently (April) purchased a new Glimakra Standard, 46" vertical countermarche, 12-shaft loom and am working now on my first 12-shaft project.  I am very excited to have a countermarche group here on weavolution!

I weave on a Glimakra Standard 8S, convertible to 10.  I bought it "used" on Ebay, but really it didn't look like the original owner had woven on it.  I was frustrated at first, but after using Vavstuga's tie up kit, it got really easy.  (Their classes are great too!)  Now if I could just retire and weave more .....

Hello fellow CM weavers!

I'm another Glimakra person -- right now I have two, a 100cm 8-S, 8-T Ideal and a 120cm 8-S, 10T Standard.  Both are horizontal CMs.

Why do I have two?  Well, when my husband and I first moved up here to the Seattle area, we lived in smaller digs and we didn't have room to set up my Standard.  So I bought the Ideal.  But when we moved into the house where we live now (almost 5 years ago now, but we just purchased it in April, whoo-hoo!) we had the space for the Standard to be set up, and so I've been weaving on that since then.

Hi Cathy!

Have you started the actual weaving yet?  I'm asking because I'm looking at converting my 8-S horizontal Standard to a 12-S vertical and am interested to know what kind of shed you're able to get when using all 12 shafts in a project.

I found an 40' 8-shaft, 8-treadle 50+ year old Toika countermarche loom two years ago and have been in love with it ever since.  It is remarkably easy to use and weaves beautifully.  Of all my looms (more than I care to admit), it is the loom that I prefer to use and the one that holds my attention most.

I have been considering a Glimakra loom purchase as well, but only because I'm finding that I am very much interested in drawloom weaving and it doesn't appear that my 50 year old Toika will really accomodate those alterations.  I missed out on getting a 60" Glimakra recently and have regretted it more than I can possibly describe.

Cathy (not verified)

Constance --

I have only woven 4 shafts on it so far.  BUT.. I am in the middle of threading the heddles for a 12 shaft pattern.  I actually found a mistake where I had threaded one thread through two heddles... it was the correct next heddle, but I had thought I had grabbed a new thread and didn't.  So, I had to pull out to end 95 in a 720 end pattern.  I work full time, so progress can be slow, but I'll be happy to let you know what I find with this warp when I actually get to the weaving part.

Cathy

conib (not verified)

I understand completely!

I have one more request -- when you get a chance, can you tell us a bit more about your project -- what fiber(s) you're using, what is it you're making, etc.?

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more about your 12-S adventure.

Hi there,

About 10 months ago my husband suprised me with a 12 Shaft Louet Spring Parallel Countermarche loom.  It's a loom that fits my height perfectly, and he made me a commuter bench to help me reach all 14 treadles.  My studio just couldn't accomodate any more looms so I had to sell my 48" 12 Shaft Scandinavian loom to make room;  ahhh well, there's a happy gal in Anchorage Alaska now!   I have had continous warps on the Spring since it arrived and have had wonderful results recently with tencel and silk fancy twill scarves.  Looking forward to lots of great conversations with all of you.

Cheers

Just wondering if anyone here is familiar with a Finnish

Countermarch loom called Ullman?

When I do my research, I don't get much info and links to Tracy Ullman,

which isn't a bad thing...

I might be going to look at one for sale. Thanks to anyone who knows anything!

I have a Glimakra Ideal 6 harness/6 treadle CM loom. Apparently the 6 harness is a little unusual. I think it was built in the late 70's. I have had it since 1998. I am very happy with it, its quiet and takes a light touch to use. I enjoy lace weaves and lifting 5 harnesses at once is not an issue.

The tie up used to be a pain, literally, until I found instructions in 2 places on tying it up at the rear. I think its like the Woolhouse device. I found the info in an old Peter Collingwood article and in a British weaving book (I think she got it from him). Now if I need to change the tie up or make an adjustment I just walk around to the rear and repeg a texsolv cord.

I have this written up with photos that I put together to share with someone else, If anyone would like the info.

-Bev

conib (not verified)

Yes *absolutely* -- a rear tie-up device is definitely something I'd like to implement, and would love to know how to make one myself.
:-)

Can you start a new topic when you post the info, so we can find it easily?

-- Constance

I would really appreciate this information. I also have a Glimakra Ideal loom and would love to be able to change the tie-up without working underneath the treadles.  It is difficult now and I am sure that it will not get an easier as the years pass.

Bev --

I would be very interested in receiving this information too.  Thanks for sharing.

We made a change recently. I will test it this weekend and send the info out after that. In a new subject providing I figure out how.

HI Joe.....you can easily adapt your Toika loom to a drawloom by either making the parts yourself or buying them from Toika.  I also have a Toika that is about 50 years old and am planning to do the same thing....I am also looking at adding a computer attachment so I can use the 16 shafts currently on the loom as ground shafts and add a combination draw attachement to the back of the loom.  I believe the Myrehed/Glimakra parts will fit as well, but I would feel better getting my parts from Toika.   I suggest you contact Joanne Hall (just google her) and ask about the conversion.  Then you may want to contact a Toika dealer to find out the same.  Adding a draw attachment is pretty straightforward for someone with woodworking experience......for those of us with less than stellar woodworking skills, reliance on the dealers is our option....<gg>.  I'll be interested to hear how your drawloom conversion progresses.

Su :-)

I first starting weaving when I was 7 years old. I thought I was so adult to be able to weave! I now have that loom which I think is a Cranbrook. It doesn't have a name on it but that is what it resembles. This was provided to our community by the government in the 1930s. Later my family bought it and now I have it. It weaves about 42". I also have another smaller counterbalance floor loom which is from the same period.

I have not been weaving lately except with my grandchildren on table looms. I want to get started again and this seems like the place to get inspired, Amelia

Hi,

I,m pretty new on this site and very happy to get into contact with you all.

I live in Denmark and have been weaving on a 10 shaft Glimakra Standard 150 cm for 10 years. Love it. Have done everything from rugs, curtains and tablecloths to the finest silk and wool scarves on it, and it works like a dream.

It would be nice to find some weavers who, like me, are used to the Scandinavian way of showing drafts. Maybe we could find a simple way of converting these American drafts, if we worked together? Or maybe somebody in her already have it figured out?

Edt

Grethe

I have a 8 shaft Lervad Countermarche (Danish) and I'm living in Denmark.

I have used American drafts, it is not that difficult to convert. to the scandinavian style. Let's try together.

edt (not verified)

Hi Grethe,

Nice to hear from you! Since this is an international site, I am writing to you in English, But  perhaps we could make a little Danish get-together by e-mail? my address is [email protected] Might be easier for both of us ?

I am still going to be using this site a good deal, though, so if you prefer, you might give me some tips here. What I really get confused by is the way both the tie up and the treadling is "upside-down " Have yoy got a simple way of handling that?

aubeweave (not verified)

Since spring I've worked on differens projects in my lokal weaving guild. Now on a swedish "gubbtacke" on 6 shaft 8 pedals. The story is from Selma Lagerlof  called Nils Holgerson. How much easier it is to weave with countermarch!
