The January thread is already getting long for us dial-up users. :D So I had to break away from the long thread.

No idea how this will work out, but the red weft there is the wool, which is twice as thick as the linen tabby. Tried to simulate this with adjusting sett and ppi and doubling weft ends for the wool in the software. The wool will actually be a single weft thread, not two shots. I'm using 8/2 cotton in the warp for now, which is similar to 16/2 linen in size. And the wool is like 8/2 being plied, so double the size. Wish me luck. Into the abyss. ;)

It's an old German twill from a 100+ year old book. Anyway, we shall see how things go. :)

So many gantastic things yoi can do combining everyday treadlings!

Looks cool, ReedGuy. Some of these old patterns are treasure troves!

ReedGuy

This is how it is shaping up in the sample. 8/2 Cotton warp, wool weft.

it looks like the draft, that is always a big plus!

And you are brave weaving this linen in winter when it is so dry!

Weavingholiday

Rich combination, I second Sally: can't wait to see it washed!

ReedGuy

I'm cogitating on the draft a bit to see if I can get a denser weave. Juggling some ideas. :)

ReedGuy

I'm working on a denser piece today. My intension is to use this as upholstry fabric for my chair build. I will probably use blue on the chair. Instead of cotton, I will use linen warp and tabby weft. I'm just using cheap cotton to see how the pattern develops in the weave. The first piece did tighten up good, but I'm experimenting further. :)

Do r emember that linen won't shrink as much (if at all) as the cotton so you'll really want to make it denser - and the wool does appear a bit thick for the purpose.

ReedGuy

Yes, I recall reading this about linen several times.  The reason I am working on a thicker sett today. I should be able to start sampling this evening. And also the wool will be twice the thickness as I want it to be bolder. But also upholstery doesn't want to be airy if it's to last. In my old antique set the linen is dense and the wool has short floats and thicker yarn than the linen.

ReedGuy

The set was doubled in this piece with 2 ends per heddle. The section on the left is without tabby weft. The strip on the right includes tabby and a firmer beat. 28 epi

I'm going to increase the sett by 4 ends and change the draft to an undulating twill threading and keep the tabby weft. I find the tabby enhances the wool pattern. I will sample a small linen piece for the next go. It won't be right away, I have begun designing my chair project now that I have my new Incra fence installed on the table saw.

So the warp is x.

The tabby weft doesn't have to be the same, it could be thinner. And that might emphasis the pattern more, which wouldn't have to be 2x as thick.

I totally applaud you for sampling. You are certain to produce a better fabric as a result!

ReedGuy

The sample is turned 90 degrees, the pattern weft is the color. The tabby is half the thickness of the pattern wool, but the same as the warp. I find the tabby brings out the wool pattern the best. I used the cotton to see how the pattern developed with different setts before using my linen for sampling. A lot of times you'll notice the pattern better in cloth if your not extremely close to it. These photos are with macro setting on the camera.
