I don't know why this scares me, but I've warped the RH to make four placemats using pick-up stick techniques -- something I've never attempted before. (I've done pick-up weaves on my inkle loom, but that's pretty tiny and there's not twisting involved. I, also, want to try out some Brook's Bouquet and Leno while I'm tackling my pick-up stick phobia.

they open up so many possibilities on the rigid heddle loom. I also love the lace weaves - I posted a cotto-lin project I did with some lace techniques on it - are super fun. I had done several of the lace techniques with needle and thread in embroidery work so was very excited to learn I could do them on the loom. Good luck and banish this spook.

I've decided to make each of the four placemats using different techniques, but using the same yarns so they'll coordinate. The next one, I think will have Leno combined with medallions (I really like those).
Leno and medallions
mixed is a good combination. I used that on a table runner and really liked the look.
Reverse Weaving and other conundrums
Do you every have an "aha" moment when you're nowhere near your loom? I was riding home with my husband when the lightbulb went off that I had probably miscalculated the center of my placemat. Sure enough. When I got home I realized I had forgotten to include the hems when figuring when to start the pattern on the other end of my placemat number one. Luckily, I only had to "un-weave" one row of medallions and three rows of pickup weave and an inch of plain weave. I didn't set the shuttle down for the night until I had "caught back up" to where I was before my setback. The first placemat is done. I've woven an inch of waste yarn and the hem for placemat No. 2. Hmm. I think I'll do some pickup weave with a thick yarn or triple my 3/2 cotton. Decisions. Decisions.

I've finished mat number two and in the process I learned to do a Leno lace pattern. This is so easy, I can't believe I hadn't tried it before.

No, but thanks for giving me idea for No. 4
Here's the results for Mat No. 3: I like Brooks Bouquet and I don't like "reverse weaving" leno. I had several unacceptable design decisions making this one, but I'm pretty happy with the final layout.

the look of trellis hemstitch although ladder hemstitch is nice too - both give a nce open weave.

I really like doing the hemstitching, too. This was a great learning experience for me, and the timeline really pushed me to accomplish it and not set it aside till I felt "comfortable."
