I just brought home my newly purchased B Ad-A-Harness 48" loom and new to weaving. At the top of the loom where the jacks and harness chains sit in the castle, there is what appears to be a gray foam blocks that the hinges appear to impact. What is this part called and where should I look to find a replacement. There is one on each end and both of them appear to need to be replaced.

I have had a 40" Model B Macomber loom for years and have never had to replace the part that you describe.  However, what you need to do is contact the manufacturer of the loom and ask them.  If it is something that needs replacement they will have the proper part.  Their web site is http://www.macomberloom.com/index.html

Michael,

What is the purpose of these pads and what would be an indicator that they need replacing?

Thanks,

are there to take up the inpact of the heddle frames as they move up and down. Just think of a metal bar beating on wood with out the pads. I had one weaver telling me that her heddle frames would not move. I number of people told her to check this and that. But in the end I told her to check the pads,  the jacks had over time stuck themself to the pads. She replaced the pads and everything went to working. Some other things to look for. Jack rods or treadle hooks jumping off. A banging sound coming from the top of the loom. If you look at the pads and they have deep grooves in them it is time to replace them.

I have pictures of what westsorb pads look like when they need to be replaced but haven't figured out how to post the photos. If anyone knows how to post pictures or would like a copy of the pictures emailed, just let me know.
