Karren,

When calculating the 1% of soda ash for the cotton scour do you consider the weight of goods plus the volume of water?

Thanks,

Donna

That is just like our stocks, so it is based on the voulume of water that you use.  The goal is to achieve a certian pH, hence it depends on the amount of water present.

Donna did you scour yet? Can you tell me how and what you did? Did you do a big old skein? Washing machine? i just switched to cotton and have to scour - any help or direction greatly appreciated!

The agitaion in the machine can make one snarly mess of a skein.  Some machines can be used to spin them out but that depends on which  machine you have.

Mary,

I did scour.  I started with 4 skeins.  I saw somewhere on our forum where Karren said to use the following proportions - a 5 g skein, 500 ml water, 5 g soda ash, drop of synthrapol and boil 15 minutes.

So, I took 4 skeins, and multiplied by 4 to get the following amounts - 2000 ml water (2L), 20 g soda ash, drop of synthrapol and boiled all for 15 minutes.  I made sure the soda ash was dissolved before putting the cotton skeins in.  After removing the skeins, I rinsed them a few times in water.  I then squeezed the water out and put them into the dyebath.

I already had my skeins tagged with the wristbands.  Some of the tags came apart in the boil.  However, when I took them out I was able to restick them and they stayed together through the dyeing phase.

Forgot to say I just put everything in a big pot on the stove, for the boil, and wrung out the skeins by hand.

Also, I used an enamel canning pot. ;-)
