My question is about the shaft channels on older Schact standard looms. Are the shaft channels made of wood on the new ones or are they metal. It says to spray silicon spray on pivot points and things attaching the jacks, and that makes sense because they're metal, but my shafts slide up and down in wooden channels. Do you silicon the wood? Thanks, Sue

When something is supposed to slide over a piece of wood (like shaft frames in grooves in a wooden castle) I use paste wax on the wood.

Years ago, when I had a wood-channel Schacht and they said use silicone spray.  I didn't like the idea, but tried it anyway by spraying the product on a cloth and using that to wipe the edges and channels.  It worked, but I still had reservations after hearing what a mess it makes for re-finishers.  But hey, it's my loom!

If there is metal on metal involved, get something like Topcoat a sealant from Bostik, it is used on wood working machine tops or Bladecote a lubricant for blades. Both don't interfere with wood finishing. Lasts longer than paste wax. They are US products, have to be shipped by ground.

The channels for the shafts on my new Baby Wolf are metal.
