Hi - I just bought a "pre-loved" Baby Wolf and set it up, tuned it up, and lubricated it per the instructions in the on-line owners' manual. I noticed that the apron rods are missing. (The apron strings are sort of a flat nylon, not Texsolv, and consist of a continuous length of the string threaded through the holes in the cloth and apron beams. I'm assuming that this is an older design of the Baby Wolf, as the back beam doesn't pop out like the current model either.) Is it okay to use something other than "regulation" Schacht apron rods? From reading Deborah Chandler's book, it seems like it would be fine. Can I use the lease sticks, which seem to be exactly the right length? I could also just go to the hardware store and have either round or square dowels cut to the correct length. What do you all think? Also, is there any reason that I shouldn't replace the apron strings with Texsolv? It appears that they wouldn't be spaced at even intervals, since there are two holes closer together for every pass that the long string makes through the beam (to go back into the beam and then forward out of the beam). Is that a problem? I could skip one of each pair of these holes to make the distribution even, I think. Would I need to get the heavy-duty Texsolv for this, or is the lighter weight sufficient? Any sturdy cord that will pass through the holes is fine.  As for the rods, some people prefer wooden dowels, some metal. You can find either at a hardware store.  Some stores will even cut to length (bring the measurement with you) if they don't have something pre-cut.

I replaced the continuous black cord with texsolv on my Baby Wolf and it works great. Lunatic Fringe sells a kit to do this but all you need is some texsolv cord. Kate
