I bought it at the market, but I shouldn't have. It is marked as 70% pashmina, 30% silk, and cost 60 SEK (less than USD 10). A burn test shows that the main ingredient is not an animal fiber - and the price shows that someone involved in the making is not being paid enough.

It feels nice enough, and looks fun. A closer look shows that the warp is black and white, end-on-end. Apart from a few areas, it has double layers. The wefts are alternating red and teal, and after every 7th red pick there is an elastic shot, that goes between the layers. The elastic is only anchored at the few single-layer areas. There is no selvedge - it has a cut and hemmed single-layer stripe at the long sides.

Some pictures - perhaps it can inspire?

stretched out it is about 65 cm (ca 26")

Finally, a detail:

Interesting! It probably did come from somewhere near the Himalayas, but I have found that like your material, accurate descriptions of textiles can get quite elastic. Some are downright optimistic. But even so, the ingenuity of the weaver attests to an amount of skill and accomplishment that is grossly undervalued.

The weavers are earning less than Fair Trade wages, which are already below subsistance level.

Interesting structure.

I enjoy looking at scarfs I find at the shopping mall fashion clothing stores, often they are very nice, just as often they are falling apart on the rack.

Thanks!

Have a good day!

Hi Kerstin, thanks for posting, ideas are good with the introduction of the elastic thread in combination with doubleweave.  Any chance you can rename your original subject to:

Double Weave ideas, bought at market

That way our threads will have identifiable subjects for reference in the future.  I cannot change it, I think whoever posts the comment has to edit the title.  Deb

Yes - it worked (and I see your point!). First I could not find the edit option - for the first post it is titled "edit forum details" (just FYI)

as the group is still without content (if one looks at the group description page) I wonder if I will make it "live" by posting in this hidden thread.

I found the thread because there is a link in the group description.

For good measure I 'm adding a picture - unfortunately I can't find a pic of the shawl described in the thread... but it is a shawl, at least.

the new comment (above) showed up in the "feed". This means the whole thread is visible, IF accessed from the "feed".

however, on the group page it still says "there is no content in this group"

also, the "breadcrumbs" on this thread reads "Home » Groups » Double weave ideas, bought at the market". I would have expected the group name ("scarf borders and finishes") between "groups" and thread name, as is usual for threads submitted through an established "group".
