From the fringe, it appears to be cotton?

Yes, sorry it didn't make it to the final version -- I used cotton warp typically used for rag rug weaving -- black and white. Thanks for the question -- I had a little difficulty getting the project description online. Bob

I am about to get my first rigid heddle loom (I just bought a used 4 shaft floor loom last month and am so enjoying my first weaving experiences.  I would love to recycle my Tshirts into a project like this.  Can you tell me if there is a size to the cotton warp you are using.  I'm assuming you would warp the reed  (a 10 inch reed?) with a solid color cotton warp  (you used black and white cotton to create the stripes)and then weave your half inch strips in a simple tabby pattern (sorry if my weaving vocabulary isnt 100% accurate).  How did you create and attach the handle? I think from the photo you just braided the tshirt strips ... and then stritched them so they wouldnt unravel? and then sewed them onto the bag?  I'd love to make tote bags this way!

I'm a self-taught weaver, so no need to apololgize re: vocabulary. I'd like to take a workshop or class to become more technically proficient -- have been weaving on my own for about 4 years -- fixed heddle only (initially the Ashford Knitter's loom, and now a larger Schacht Flip Loom). Now to your questions: I did use a cotton or cotton/poly warp, 8/4 is the designation on the cone, so fairly heavy. I also used a 10-dent reed, and did straight plain weave (tabby?). I also experimented with alternating the t-shirt weft with a weft of the warp yarn, which created a different pattern of warp stripes. Re: the straps, you're correct in that the photo shows braided straps, stitched to hold, then attached the the bag. I have a larger bag for which I actually wove a 30" x 2-1/2" wide strap, using the same pattern and color sequence of the bag fabric. Hope this helps -- I think of myself as more of an inuitive weaver than technically proficient, but I really enjoy what I've done. Thanks for your interest.

The extra info is great.  I just got my 20 inch Flip yesterday and am doing my first little scarf on it.  I think it will be great fun to try to improvise on this one, as everything seems to make more sense on it than the 4 shaft loom to me right now.  I think I am going try to make a tote bag out of my old shirts and weave the strap like you suggested.  Would love to see a photo of your other bag, if you have time to post it.

Notes
I purchased 100% cotton t-shirts in solid colors with no side seams from a thrift store. I then cut the t-shirts in 1/2" continuous strips and used the strips for the weft. The finished fabric was folded over to make a bag, stitched at the sides, and lined with cotton fabric. Straps and magnetic closures were added, along with a decorative button.
