time to get weaving - remember the goal is to weave at least a few picks a day - or get out that potholder loom and weave a potholder - needle weave a sample - weave something!

I just did a smidgen tonight and ordered some more yarn

endorph

ordering more yarn - what a nice activity! I managed to get about 7 inches woven on a towel last night - only 30 more das to go!

Wove on the 8-shuttle shadow weave dishtowels last night, and a few picks on the blue dimity dishtowel warp before work this morning.

In the photo below, the thin stripes within the broader color stripes will be raised, as they are threaded in a twill and sleyed together. The effect will be more pronounced when released from tension and washed. (I hope!)

My hope is to get the rosepath warp finished this month - in a couple of weeks I am taking a four day Swedish Art weaves workshop that will give me several hours of weaving everyday. I also need to get a warp on the RH sometime this month - so as long as I actually sit down at a loom everyday I should be okay for this challenge.

endorph

is over and done with - I barely made it to the loom but finally last night about 8:45 p.m. I sat down and wove one stripe repeat - basically and inch and a half of plain weave and one rosepath stripe. Hoping to do better this evening - I am halfway through the second towel. If I did my math correctly I should get four towels and a bit out of this warp. I have another warp wound and ready to go on the loom when I finish these towels - that warp has been waiting several month to get on the loom!

endorph

was not so much about weaving as unweaving - :( - I had one of those moments of can I leave the booboo? will anyone see it but me? But in the end I figured it was only half an inch and I am much happier now . . .

Saturday. I worked on a red shawl at farmer's market. I also sold 4 shawls and 2 rugs . Good sales for a cold market morning. Worked on a green rug and started rewarping the Cranbrook Cut off a blue and turquoise shawl and finished it. After I finish warping the Cranbrook I need to retie the studio loom and finish off the blue and white warp.

endorph

you make me tired with all that work! sounds like a good farmer's market. I have been weaving a little each evening. I am almost halfway through towel number 3 on the rosepath warp. Progress is slow but at least it is progress. I have also picked out some yarn to warp the RH with - just need to get that chore done and I can weave on both looms.

I have been going there for 9 years. I came home tonight and the yarn I ordered has arrived. There is nothing more exciting than. Opening a box of yarn, God bless e-bay

endorph

what a nice thing to come home to. I managed another 2 inches woven on towel number 3 - so far I have been successful in weaving a little bit every day this month!

Erica

I've mostly been spinnung fir my Witch's Brew dare, but I did some warping for my next undulating twill sample and started tge strap for my bag. I have a threading error so I have to fix that!

endorph

forward to seeing your yarn Erica. I need to get out my spindle and try spinning again. Its just really hard to spin with my two four footed helpers around! So fat so good on weaving everyday. After I finish in here it is off to wind a couple of quills and get some weaving in today.

I finished the green rug and have rewarped with red /brown.. I also finished another shawl and used some of the new yarn to rewarp. I wish I had more time to spend on in the studio ,but. I teach and am pretty worn out at end of the day.

endorph

to the worn out at the end of the day statement! me too! Why does work have to get in the way of our hobbies? I have finished towel number three and am into towel number four. Looking at the warp that is left on the loom I might squeeze out five??? I did not sample as much as originally planned so have some extra warp. Tomorrow I start a four day workshop with Joanne Hall so I will have four days of many hours of weaving - yippee! The dogs are going to the kennel so all I have to worry about is weaving. Weave on everyone!

sally orgren

I am approaching the last stretch of the current tablet-woven band and beginning to think about the next warp.

And as I approach the end of the towel warp, I am also trying to decide what to put on that loom. It has to be 4 shafts.

Erica J

Last night I tied on this sample last night!

I also feel I've fininshed sampling for my herringbone strap. I've sampled three colours and think the dark green below (sorry its blurry) really gives the herringbone feel.

One the note of herringbone: What do you think really makes a herringbone?

I've noticed a few things about commercial herringbones, they tend to have be monochrome, but with a slight tonal variation. So I'm curious what makes herringbone to other weavers.

Ta,

Erica

I am a NEW, and I mean really new person who is trying to learn to weave. I end up weaving every day, so I thought I would add my commment and see if I can win one of those great prizes. Don't really know how to go about it, but maybe a comment will work. I am just starting my first shawl..... My goal is to weave Christmas gifts this year, and I better get on those towels I have planned quickly. Having a lot of fun, it IS fascinating...

paulz

Yep You've got to be in it to win it. My first piece was a piece of cloth to see what to do. Now I'm doing rugs- and trying out a double weave. I must take some photos to put on. Trouble is I am enjoying the weaving so much i just want to keep just doing a little bit more. Not take photos.I work with students with BESD (Behaviour, Emotion and Social Difficulties so it is essential to do something when I get home. Weaving is just the thing.

Erica

Remember the big prizes are based on voting for Halloweave Projects. So if you want to enter to win one of those please make sure you add your Halloweave Projects and choose Halloweave 2013 under Activies and Events Drop down menu. To make sure you're project is posted properly, click on Projects then the Halloweave Tab.

Good luck everyone,

Erica

I've been designing for the past few days, trying to come up with a new Ram's Horn patterns I'm happy with.  I'm ready to move on to new desgins after this one, I think.

NRVweaver

I think this is a wonderful idea, so I've got my project planned and now just have to start winding that warp so I can hopefully do some weaving in October!

Joanne Hall - forgot to bring my camera home this evening so will post photos later. We are working in Swedish Art weaves. Today we did an interlocking tapestry method and Halvkrabba. It was exhausting but rewarding - three more days to go.

kerstinfroberg

To my mind, a herringbone is a broken-reversed even-sided twill on any number of shafts. There should be no reverses in the treadling (or at least very few and far apart). (A "continuous" point twill, to me, is just a point twill)

day two of Joanne's workshop. I posted some photos over on Daily Check-in October 2013 http://weavolution.com/group/daily-weaverliness/daily-check-october-2013-27365

What are the buttons for on your dimity warp?

sally orgren

...and they are holding down some of my threading errors in the warp, if you must know! ;-)

I decided to just cut the errant warps, rethread, anchor into the heading with these button pins, and keep weaving.

I am sure to get a black spot from the weavers-of-old for this slap-dash repair when I certainly had the opportunity to unweave and put it right.

Got about half of my threaded-in tablet band warped today while they replaced 2 of the floor to ceiling windows in my condo. A combination of "we're too cheap to hire a lift to do this right", and "we're really just cowboys" makes me hope these things dont blow out in a stiff wind.  Six re-schedules and it doesn’t inspire confidence when they come in announcing "This week has been chaos".

Leslie M (not verified)

Oh, sorry, Sally, didn't realize they were pins! I do the same thing all the time, but not with such fancy pins.

endorph

is over - it was an intense, challenging and immensely fun four days. My brain is bursting at the seams!

paulz

My challenge is to do some double weaving. I am absolutely amazed because I have done about 8 rows and its working. I can put a shuttle along the weaving right to the very end.

The other thing I've noticed, and its obvious really, is that the weaving is not as dense as the previous weaving with the same warp yarn (obviously half the density as its twice the width with the same number of warp threads).

I suppose to have the same density you need to double the number of warp threads (That will have to wait for another time).

La La

I am actually at it everyday. I finished four scarves on one warp. Unfortunately I can't post a picture, because I gave them all away, but they came out very nicely,(at least in my eyes). Now I am starting a shawl for a Christmas present. Then on to the towels for Christmas presents. I WILL have to do something every day, the time is getting shorter. Couldn't figure out how to post something for the Halloweave contest, but that's ok.

Endorph,

This challenge group was a great idea- I've actually done something weave related each day, even if it was just drafting designs.  Like paulz, I find it's a great stress buster!  AND>>> I actually am going to have some nice bookmarks to insert into Christmas cards.

endorph

glad to hear this challenge has been a help to you - I needed the motivation myself! I have been at the loom everyday - at least for a few minutes. Or in some cases for several hours! Its been fun - the trick is keeping it up after Halloween.

pammersw

How do I get on your Christmas card list? :D

I've been spinning every day, since I don't have a loom yet.

One of my students is a sixth-grader and is just starting off with weaving. Tonight after school I was showing him how to finish up his little pouch that he had created. Academics for this boy are very hard but he has taken to weaving with a vengeance. It is gratifying to see him do something well that his classmates cannot do it all. When I had him in first and second grade he used to go to the library sit under the tables and scream this is a lot more pleasant. In fact, he is my assistant every day after school while he's waiting for his siblings to go home. I wish more students in our school had access to art activities. But if it doesn't have a test or assessment that is attached to it doesn't have very much value in our education system.

Had a similar discussion with my sister, who is a teacher,  on Sunday.  She and a lot of her fellow teachers are near quitting.  In another large school district in the area,  the School Superintendent recently sent out a "don't quit" email to all the teachers and staff. She said that even for those who love kids and teaching, it is getting to be too much.

sally orgren

but does doing the guild newsletter count as weaving? (I've been doing mine for at least 15 years.)

This month was a whopper at eight pages. Most of the time it comes in at six pages (three pages, printed double-sided) because that is what used to mail for the price of stamp in the old days. Now, pretty much everyone gets it electronically.
