I decided on a Witch's Brew project (I think). I want to make the Shrug in Leno from Jane Patrick's book, the Weaver's Idea Book for a rigid heddle loom. But it seems that I always end up making a project twice because I want to make some changes in the first one, then perfect the second one. So I'm in the process of weaving the shrug in a commercial wool on my 24" Kromski Harp, and if I like the outcome, I'll make another one with my hand spun. Are we suppose to wait until October to start our HalloWeave project?

Doreen,

You don't have to wait until October. I know myself, if I really want to do this, I need to start the warp soon. You also don't have to be 100% finished by the end of Halloweave either. The purpose is to challenge yourself to do a little bit towards your dare each day!

The shrug sounds great! I'm very much looking forward to seeing pictures of your progress!

Cheers,

Erica

I've been percolating this idea for a long time. I'd love to weave long narrow panels and create Japanese inspired abstract tapestries. This was the perfect opportunity to challenge me to bite the bullet and get started. I'm using cotton 10s 2s and some very fine linen that I'm using 3 strands as one thread which alternate for the warp. i decided on an 8 shaft twill that I can vary for different effects. Its threaded 2/2/3 in a 12 dent reed to get 28epi. EEEK! It's pretty scary! My first problem came in the winding. I wound the 1 cotton and 3 linen at the same time on my warping board trying to keep the cotton up at the cross and the linen down. I thought I was extremely careful, but while threading the reed (I warp front to back) I found several instances when I reverse it... EEEK! I've threaded the warp linen through the heddles on 1-3-5-7 and cotton on 2-4-6-8. It would have been SO much easier to have only 2 ends per dent, but NO I thought I needed more than 24 epi so I had to make it complicated! EEEK! I'm now winding the warp onto the back bream... EEEK! I'm glad I only have a 3 yard long warp! And this is only the warp part of the project!!! Many more challenges to come!!!

I finished the shrug using the commercial yarn, and while it came out very nice I decided that it's not something that I would wear. So I think I'm going to make a scarf with some hand spun, hand dyed mohair. I can't start it until next week because my guild is having a dye day at my house this weekend and I can't focus until that's over.

Here is one of the shrug panels.

ScrafI have finished my scraf with handspun wool for the weft. I used blue wool for the warp to represent summer, the coral to represent fall, with the handspun gray's to represent the coming of the winter season. The white handspun to represent the snow of winter and the brown to show the ground color of winter. Spun some color in the white to show that even in the heart of winter, there is still some color and life. Enjoyed this project.

I finished the tenth bear fabric tonight.  Still need to weave paws for two or three, and the fabric for the last bear.  I finished the next step of my assembly line sewing.  Tomorrow, I need to press seams open, and then do the final machine sewing.

Jenny, I'm so glad Halloweave is being so productive for you? I have been so busy that I haven't been able to weave everyday! However I have my warp wound and that's a step! Cheers, Erica

I posted the pics of my completed tapestry which is now being hung in the a Merrill Lynch Art Show with the Landings Art Association here in Savannah. I also posted pics of my 2nd tapestry which I have yet to mount for display. You can see them on my projects page. Thanks to Weavolution, Halloweave and Witch's Brew for motivating me to get started on something I have been thinking about for a long time!
