I have just begun( about two months worth of experience) to weave using a rigid heddle loom and am completely obsessed. I have played with the pick up stick creating float patterns and have even discovered how to translate drawn and pulled thread embroidery patterns into lace weaves. Now the ghost I am ready to tackle is using two heddles. So that is my challenge to myself. Before Oct 31 to actually try and warp both heddles andd weave a sampler. Its time to stop reading about it and do it. Wish me luck!

I'm sure you'll do fine.  Betty Davenport's book is good if you don't have that one, but there are other sources of info for two heddle weaving.  I believe Syne Mitchell wrote an article for WeaveZine so you could try searching that website.

cheers,

Laura

Hi endorph

Welcome to Spook of the Loom!

...As you can already see, Weavolution is a great place to find help and inspiration with your weaving.

We're looking forward to hearing how you get on weaving with two heddles!

I'm so glad to see this topic. My Flip is coming in this week, and I'm looking forward to warping two heddles to give it a try. Will check out the info from the WAL group. Endorph, good luck with your sampler! Can't wait to see it! b

Woke up sick Firday morning so did not get anything done yesterday but I finished warping today and will start the sampler as soon as I get off here. Thank goodness for Jane Patrick's book - it is a life saver! MSbeckey - hope you like your Flip as much as I like mine. I am looking forward to many evening exploring the possibilities of rigid heddle and in about three weeks I take and intro to floor loom class - I am definitley hooked on weaving.

I am weaving with two heddles - am working out of the Patrick book to do a sampler - playing with different wefts - will take pictures to document and when I figure out how to post them here will do so - Thank you to everyone for their encouragement

So I have been weaving with the two heddles - playing with modified basket weave, plain weave, separate layers - one on top one on the bottom, then switching so the bottom is on top, ouble width, tube, slit in the middle - its been lots of fun - now to look at double weave but that will have to wait until after class on Saturday since I need to get the look cleared. When I figure out how I will post a picture or two.

I'm impressed that you created so many patterns using just two heddles...I really like the weaving in the top area of the top right hand photo, and the leno(?) detail in the photo above.

Which of the patterns are you most pleased with?(I'm just curious!)

I am just now discovering all you can do with the rigid heddle loom - much more than I expected. I like the modified basket weave and the simple twill is good too. I am in love with leno and its many variations so was excited to try it on the sampler with it floating on the top layer with the other color showing through. I think I will do another sampler and do larger swaths of the patterns I liked, maybe using a differnt yarn. For this one I used what I had at home and that was a size 5 cotton crochet thread. I used two 10 dent reeds. Jane Patrick's book is filled with great ideas!

You took to this fantastically. Great job!

endorph

I am really excited about this and so glad I gave it a try - my next sampler will be a little neater and polished - my goal is to make a sampler that I can actually use as a wall hanging. Thanks to everyone for their encouragement.

So I finished the scarf last night that we started in class Saturday. Learning balanced weave by doing a buffalo check, so tonight I will start warping the loom for my larger doubleweave sampler. I am planning on something about 10 inches wide and longer enough to allow 2-4 inches for each of the patterns I want to practice on. I am hoping to end up with a piece I can use as a wall hanging. Will post pictures as I progress. Tina

dark geen and cream - that I wanted to used for my wall hanging but when I got home I decided I wanted to use hthe green for a holiday runner instead. So I am now waiting for the sage green cotton I ordered to use instead. In the meantime I have warped and started on a shawl that I need to get done before class on the 8th - that's a houndstooth class - then once that project is done I will warp and begin weaving the double weave wall-haning. Good thing I have all month.
