Hi all,

I know this probably sounds like a silly question - but is the Vav conference in Sweden going to be conducted entirely in Swedish?  My Kodachrome Jacket is one of the winners in the Handwoven Garment Challenge, so will be going to the conference as part of their Fashion Show - I was thinking about going to see it there, especially if some of the tracks are in English (sometimes conferences with participants from lots of countries provide an English translation).

Bonnie Inouye told me there were expected to be about 10,000 participants - now THAT is amazing!!!!

Anyone know?

That is a great question Tien and if someone doesn't post the answer quickly, I'll write Tina and ask. I also would love to go. Your jacket is spectacular! I'm glad you get to go show it off!

IIRC, there *has* been seminars in English, but that definitively as an exception. This time, it looks like there will be three talks in English. Download the programme (in English). (If that doesn't work, go to http://www.svenskavav.com and scroll down a bit)

And, with all respects for Bonnie, "participants" in those numbers can be counted in different ways... certainly, there will probably be 10000 or more "clicks" at the gates. How many ppl that represents - who knows? (I have, on occasion, made more than 10 "clicks" in a couple of days.) I have no idea of how many registered participants there has been over the years, but I seem to remember something like 1200 registrants in '96. Which really doesn't relate to anything...

I'll be going there too and will look out for you, - and your winning jacket :-)

This conference is on my bucket list. (I have been a subscriber for many years.) I believe it happens only every 3 years? This would be the year to go, Tien! How fast can you learn Swedish?

Kerstin Lovallius is working on this conference and she is the person who gave me the number. It is not like Convergence. I think she is counting "clicks". I had lunch with her today and I like her very much. She said that the lecture by Ulla Cyrus has sold out but there is still room in some events. Weavers I met in Oslo are eager to go to Sweden for this conference and it is not too long a drive for them. There is a lot to see in the town of Boras, including a large textile museum. Ulla Cyrus is now 98 years old and still very sharp; she gave an exciting talk when she was only 85 years old.  I don't know how many day passes were sold during Convergence 2010, or how many tickets to the fashion show, etc.

Do check the website for Vav 2011. Sweden is a wonderful country. (Norway is great, too.) I have to fly from Stockholm to the USA tomorrow. Springtime in Stockholm is fantastic!

I have been to two VAV conferences and they are very well attended.  Many weavers arrive in busses and if several busses arrive at the same time, the isles get very crowded.  There are many exhibits in the building and if it got too crowded, I would go to see them.  Some exhibits have student work from the weaving schools and there are exhibits of the work of fiber artists, so there is a lot to see right there in the same building.  There are also bus trips to museums and other things of interest.  I have taken the bus trips in the past and they are always very interesting.  I have been to the weaving loom museum in Boras and it is very interesting.  When I was there they turned on some of the weaving looms so we could see them run.

I will be at the Glimakra booth during much of the conference.  Karin Myrehed will also be there, so if you are interested in drawloom weaving, she is the one to talk to.

Thanks!  I am still mulling it over.  But it sounds like the conference will be fabulous!  It's just a matter of seeing whether the finances will allow.

The European Textile Network is holding their big conference in September and it might be possible to go from one to the other. There are "cheap" flights between Goteborg the Lithuanian town with the conference, according to the website. When I was in Oslo recently, I was very pleased to have some time with Vibeke Vesteby. She has been working on the TC-2 loom and preparing to teach a workshop in Lithuania  for this conference.
