Notes:

The traditional Bedouin designs are woven in warp substitution technique which results in very long floats on the back of the work. I applied some Bolivian highland technology to this piece and wove the center part in what I call "embedded double weave", that is, a strip of warp-faced double weave next to plain weave. The checkerboard-type designs on the outsides are not double weave. They are warp substitution with a second finer weft used to secure the long floats that would normally be created on the back. That trick with the second fine weft does not create an attractive finish on the back for the style of weaving used in the central black and white area and so double weave was the best option.

I like to turn my experiments into useful or at least cute things and so this one has become a 3 x 3 1/2 inch "doorknob dangler". I made a 4-strand braid and sewed that to the edge and used it as the strap adding yarn to make the tassels fuller. It was a successful experiment and I hope to make a large wall hanging with Bedouin designs soon.

Love it!

Great idea for using woven bands! Love the design and colors and your explanation re: securing long floats on the backside...intrigued but not sure I understand the second finer weft....do both the weft threads enter in the same open shed?

Strip weave....interesting patterns

I weave on a small "toy" loom that only makes 5and 1/2 inch narrow bands soooooo.... this is wonderful and would be a grand project for me.
