Handwoven Jacket with Mary Sue Fenner at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota
Mary Sue will take students through the basic alterations and sewing skill to make fabric into a jacket. Students will learn about sewing supplies, fitting a pattern, basic seam options, darts, and finishing techniques to make a one-of-a-kind beautiful jacket. Students will need to bring a few sewing pattern choices that accommodate their bust measurement and five yards of handwoven fabric, fulled and ready to sew. Plain or twill fabrics work well in any fiber combination. However, wool really sews and presses nicely. Weaving sett should be 10-12 epi for Harrisville-type wools, and 15-18 epi for finer fibers. Students need to bring a sewing machine and serger in good operating condition. The serger is optional. To inspire students, Mary Sue will bring many jacket samples for participants to try on and explore more closely.

Mary Sue Fenner’s education gave her an excellent background in fibers. She majored in clothing, textiles and design at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, studied art at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Polytechnic, England and Kansas University, and received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Now, a retired instructor from the North West Technical College in Green Bay, WI, Mary Sue maintains her business, Fiber Designs. She is known for her use of bright colors and handspun yarns. Her clothing and accessories can be seen in area shows, galleries and shops, and Handwoven, Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot, Belle Armoire, Altered Couture, Sew Somerset, and Haute Handbags magazine have featured her artwork.
