I'm winding 530 ends with 10/2 mercerized cotton.  Is there an advantage or disadvantage in splitting the warp into two parts for dressing the loom?

Usually a bout of warp is about 4 inches to 10 inches of the weaving width, depending on what you are weaving.  If you are winding on a warping board or winding with linen or any non-stretchy warp threads, then the bouts are smaller.  Dividing into bouts not only makes the warp ends more consistently the same length, but it also makes it easier to put the warp on the loom.  I describe dividing warps into bouts in my book, Learning to Warp your Loom.
