I'm just getting back into weaving on my Baby Wolf. It's had a hard life; I think my ex-husband had it folded up in the garage for 7 years before I was able to retrieve it. It seems to be working find...except the beater is not hitting the fell evenly. I've gone to the Schact website and followed their advice (gently twisting it). I've measured to make sure the loom is open all the way, and it seems to be squared. I've placed a level on the castle to make sure I'm level from side to side, and front to back. The left side of the better still hits about 1/16" of an inch before the right side of the beater. I haven't gone so far as to completely take the beater off the loom, lay it on a flat surface and see if it's just warped somehow, but I'm tempted. Would that even work? If it is warped, can anyone give me any ideas on how to unwarp it? Sanding? Would Schact sell me a new beater assembly or would that be pointless? What I just totally dismantled the loom, checked all the screws, and reassembled it? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. Lisa Ann in Upstate Carolina

Worry not, you'll get lots of help from Weavolution! The first thing that I would try is loosen all the screws, 'stress' the beater bar in the direction it does not want to go (warp the other way just a bit), then, possibly with help from a friend, tighten all screws as it is being stressed. I used to use my elbow and hand as the stressor, so I could do this all by myself. I've found this does wonders on a variety of smaller looms over the years...it's a fast try, anyway. Keep writing and give folks a chance to hear from you...best of luck!

I'm getting ready to go out and try it now. Keep your fingers crossed!

Bummer...I just pulled the entire beater assembly off the loom, and laid it flat on a level surface. The left leg (as you were facing it if it were in the loom) is higher than the right - the right leg lies perfectly flat on the floor. Does that mean something's warped? Do I need to get a new beater assembly from Schacht? Is that even possible? Hmmm....

My Old Structo Artcraft Floor Loom has been off by 1/4 inch since 1986 and I have woven some beautiful stoles, yardage and baby blankets on it. Each fabric starts slanted and ends slanted, so, when I take off the fabric, it's just never been a problem! I don't think you have to worry about 1/16 of an inch....but....just out of curiousity, write to Schacht and see what they say and advise. They are really nice folks and maybe you just need a new LEG! Go the their site at: http://www.schachtspindle.com/

Or try this contact at: [email protected]

It's going to be fine! Have a great day!

I have also found this problem with my Mighty Wolf.  I called Schacht and they were VERY helpful!  The suggestion was to take the entire beater bar off the loom.  Take all screws out and check each piece of wood individually.  I found the "shuttle race" to be warped.  All other pieces are fine.  Schacht is sending me a new shuttle race through a store called "Bountiful Spin/Weave" in Ft. Collins, CO.  Nice folks!

Keeping fingers crossed this will be the fix I needed to get my beater to even out.

I am sure that Schacht will do the same for you, Lisa Ann. My husband, Jim Hokett, works with wood and you have to remember that wood is just one-time removed from being the tree....wooden things can change with the weather or when you move from a humid environment to a dry, dry desert!

Have you contacted Schacht yet? Asking is FREE!

I swear, I have the hardest time getting my comments to "take"! Anyway, I haven't contacted Schact yet - I was too anxious to start weaving and put on a narrow warp. It's doing fine with a narrow warp...next warp will be wider, and I'll see what happens. Thanks for the comments and suggestions!

I put on a 12" wide warp yesterday...and managed to get the beater problem straightend out. Thanks, everyone for your help & suggestions!

Susanneroonie

How did you straighten out the beater? What steps did you take?

"Garage kept" is not a good thing to say about looms...

I am having the same issue just on the right side. I followed instructions to losten the bolts and pust it into alignment and tighten the screws which did not help. I emailed Schacht a week ago about buying a new "Leg" when I lay it on the floor there ia about an inch raised on the bottom of the right side. If I put a steel ruler on it it looks to be flat not warped.

Thank you for this opportunity to get some guidance on how to have an even beat with a Rigid Heddle.  I am a newbie, so I have not developed much muscle memory at this point in time.  Is there a location on the beater bar that you should place your hands? Inside? Outside? Middle?  Thank you.
