i recently shared with karren, that a friend came over last week to "show"me how she dyes - well, i'm open to learning from everyone...right? we dyed a mohair shawl, the technique was easy. Fill a big old pot with water and put some fire under it. take a big old mason jar and fill with hot water and about a good dollop of syntropol. Than take your plastic spoon (one you'd eat ice cream with usually) and scoop out dye until you like the color - you can always add more! Then put about 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 glugs of vinegar in the big old pot of steaming water. Now for the good part.

Throw the fiber in the big old pot - dunk a few times. Pull out - voila, you are finished. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes - NOT KIDDING.

Well, the dye or the process matted the fiber terribly. I don't have the best comparison, but at least you'll be able to see the matting in the rasberry fiber. The light brown was done by me, using Karren's process about 2 weeks ago. The fiber was light, air, lofty. The new shawl is dense and drab in feel.

Here's my link.

We have ruined you for quick and easy dyeing.

But as I've said before (experience is soo much better), Lanaset leaves the fibers feeling wonderful. Easy on the fiber.

No, I can never go back over to the "dark" side of dyeing either. The results we get now are so stunning plus I know the dye will not wash out! Your friends shawl may fade quickly only haven been in the dye bath for 10 minutes. My eyes have been opened!

We'll just have to call Karren's group a non kool aid cult - (double entendre!)

Mary, has your friend said anything regarding the difference between her piece and yours?  It is obvious to us!  This makes me sick....The matting of the fibers not to mention it won't be color fast.  It seems like if you are going to put the time and effort into making something, you want to finish it RIGHT, and to me, in this case, it includes the dyeing.
