I have finally gotten my new to me Macomber 48" loom all dressed and ready for her first party.  For some reason, the cable brake does not hold tension.  Would replacing the cable with new take care of this problem?  It held good the first bit I wove, but after I advanced the cloth it slips just enough that I cannot get a shed.  Any help you guys can offer would be so apreciated.  I have attached some pictures (I hope) of how we have the brakes set up.  Are they correct, or do changes need to be made?

I would tighten up on the top bolt. You may have to put on some lock tight (comes in a tube) or replace the nuts with lock nuts. This is a nut with a nylon plug in the inside making it stiff to turn. The nuts are 1/4" 20 if I remember right. Replacing the cable would not help. I would also take the slack out of the chain. Try this and let me know if it helps.

I just want back an looked, why are there two springs? One is pulling down and the other one is pulling up. You need to remove the upper spring and use a piece of chain.

Hi Joyce, Out on Sarah Haskill's site, there are several good pics of brake set-ups. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zF80bd8NRiw/SrbSF5Cd34I/AAAAAAAAAZ0/ZqY2zOu0Y84/s1600-h/DSC02002.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zF80bd8NRiw/SqlmRn6qKII/AAAAAAAAAYc/0ynD5AGZjxQ/s1600-h/DSC01937.jpg If you haven't poured over her blog, it's a wonderful resource. Good luck! Connie

Thank you for the awesome photo showing me how it should look.  We will get that changed this weekend.

Also I noticed you seem to have two springs at the bottom connecting the black arm.  We only have one.  Is there a reason for the two springs?

Thanks for your help as I have no clue.

Your spring looks good, my springs are like me getting old and worn out.

I got the friction brake onto my Baby Mac and I think it is going to be so much nicer.  I warped up with a wool shawl that I am just going to be doing a tabby but using all 8 harnesses.  Another first with the Baby for me.  So far the tension seems to be staying nice and even.  I am heading to bed and will start the actual weaving tomorrow.  G'night all!
