i just a stupid thing - soda ash before salt! aghhhh.. strike 1 or round 2. however i look at it - it's a redo!

couple questions:

1. if i want to make a stock of soda ash water - would i make 4 different batches?

SODA ASH

0.25= 6g PER LITER OF WATER

1 = 8 g/L

2 = 11g/L

4 = 15g/L (after DOS 4, i don't increase the soda ash or salt?)

6= 15g/L

8= 15g/L

THEN IF I WAS AT 2% DOS and needed 2.2g salt - I would add 22ml (2.2g x 10ml) of soda ash water + the difference in water to make up the Volume of Soda Ash Water such as 28ml of water)?

I've done that - the jars of soda ash are just sitting there in the water bath waiting to be added.  I now have a mantra - "salt first, soda ash second".  We'll see if that helps.

I think i'll hire a airplane writer to post it in the sky for me so i can see it thru the kitchen window -

Mary, making soda ash stock can be done but is sure complicates the calculations because the amount of water has to be taken into account.   The storage of the soda ash is not good either.  My advice is KISS (keep it simple, s...).  Same with the salt, forget a stock.

ok, will do- BUT was i correct in my thinking with what i thought i wanted to do?

did you mean Keep It Simple Sister? Silly? Superstar? not quite sure there Karren!

Yeah to the calculations of the stock or Keep It Simple Superstar!?

The worksheet loks fine as far as it goes, I don't understand the calculations in the text; what would be the concentration of the soda ash stock?

  Maybe Superdyer?

what i was thinking is: DOS = 2% which means 11g/L. If i make a liter of water and add 11g of soda ash, and my needs are 2.2g of soda ash for a 5g skein, would i multiply the 2.2g x 10 (or what?) to determine the amount of soda ash water that I'd need. I figured i'd need to add water to make up the 50g needs of total soda ash water.

Mary,

If you dissolve 11g in 1 L of water you have made a 1.1%stock. ( You have been dissolving 2g/100mL which is 20g/L to get a 2% dye stock.) To get 2.2g of soda ash from a 1.1% stock you need 2.2g/1.1%=2.2g/0.011 =200mL. This is too much water to be adding with the soda ash.

Usually the soda ash stock is 10% or 100g/L.  This concentration is difficult to dissolve and keep but requires only 22mL to give you 2.2g of soda ash.

OK, thanks very much. i get it. :-)
