Beaded hem scarf

Here's a scarf I wove on the same warp as another scarf that didn't work. I didn't have enough warp left to weave my usual 60 inch scarf with fringe, so I wove what I could and put a pick of seed beads in the fold of the hem.

The draft is a 4S snowflake twill. I opened a plain weave shed which gave me close to the same spacing as the beads. I put in one pick of pre-strung seed beads using a pick-up stick to adjust the warp ends between the beads where necessary. Then I changed to the next snowflake shed, tucked in the bead string tails, and threw the next pick. Easy!

The hand stitched hem is about 3/8 inch wide and I wove the turned-under part of the hem with sewing thread to lessen the bulk. I was going to put a beaded fringe on the scarf, but after wearing it, I don't think it needs it.

More details on my project page. (Sorry, I don't know how to link. If you click on my avatar, it will take you to my profile page which has a projects tab.)

Happy New Year everyone!

Carie, thank you so much for sharing your bead finish in the scarf finish section...it is beautiful.  For folks who want to see a detail please click here to go to Carie's profile and look at the detail photo which is on her project page.  I think her beads add a nice weight to her scarf which should give a great drape and sway to it.  Thank you Carie, nice instructions!  regards  Deb

First of all I think the color of this scarf is absolutely fabulous! It looks like there are lots of beautiful colors mixed together to make one very pretty color! Love that! However, I must say that in my world beaded fringe makes everything better! Some people like sparkles I like beaded fringe! :D So have at it! Go crazy!

I can report Carie's scarves look just as spectacular in person as they do in her photographs! (She stopped by to say Hi at the Rhinebeck meet up wearing one of her beautiful creations!)

I have woven a fine silk scarf that has a hem and needs beads. I bought the beads and the right kind of thread and needle. I want something like a small fringe or edging, more than just a line of beads along the fringe. And I think I have to provide a way to hold the weight of the beads so they do not pull on the fine silk. Ideas, please?

I have created a beaded edge on silk scarves. I found it helpful to hem the scarf before adding beads to the edge.  Not wanting to detract from the weaving, I used three seed beads to create a picot edge.  Although the beads were quite small, they did add weight to the scarf.  Actually they helped to keep the scarf in place when worn.  Sorry that I don't have a photo.

Thanks, Janet. I bought a bunch of beads but now am thinking that a small edge might look best.

Your scarf looks wonderful on the cover of the current CW Journal!
