A homemade temple

I want to share this idea for a homemade temple. I had used a gem clip with a weight hanging from it with my Bernat loom. It had rails on each side that the string could hang over. But then I sold the Bernat and got a Macomber loom. There are no side rails. So I had to come up with another solution. I had seen somewhere a bamboo strip bent and inserted into the cloth on the underside but I did not have any bamboo.

After playing around with the concept, here is what I came up with. I took a lease stick that is wider than my warp on the loom. I attached a jumbo rubber band on each end through the hole in the end of the stick and attached a large gem clip to that. I attach my temple under the warp and it holds the cloth out with just the right amount of tension while staying completely out of the way. It doesn't interfere with my seeing the fell line and it is easy to move.

I hope this will help someone else.

Thanks, Franco and Sara. I looked at the Woolgatherers site and I will keep that in mind for when my lease sticks won't work.

I believe that is the very article I saw about the bamboo! The nice thing about using the rubber bands is that I don't have to cut the stick.

I think the tension on the warp may be gentler, too.

I had never heard the term *gem clip*, so I looked it up. It is just an ordinary paper clip. Depending on the weight of your fabric, a small one could also be used. The homemade temple works great. I use the string method to support the weight, but I'm going to try the stick method. Good idea! Jenny Bellairs

Hi Vickie

I agree with Deb Mc, a picture would be terrific.

Sara, where are the cords supporting your "temple" tied at the back of the loom?  And do those cords get in the way of your shuttle when weaving?

Can anyone help me with posting the photos of the temple? I can email you the pictures. I am not able to post them myself.

I would really appreciate any help.

Are you using Firefox or IE for your browser?  Drupal websites like Weavo do not off the full range of RTE options in Internet Explorer.  It may br your browser that is causing you problems.

The cords run from the back beam to the breast beam.

No, they do not get in the way of normal shuttle throwing.
