Hello,

I have three floor looms, but considering a rigid heddle loom for portability - not for planes and such, but to weave outside or in another area of my house. Are there any RH weavers who can recommend a smaller, good portable loom for this purpose? I have heard good things about Schact flips. Ideally, I would like something that can sit comfortably in my lap.

Thank you,

Kathryn

I prefer the 16" fixed frame RH loom from Ashford. It braces against the edge of a table and works beautifully in the lap. The rounded corners on the frame are comfy in the lap. It weaves very nice fabrics as well.

Perfect! That's just what I was looking for -- a small and comfy loom to pack around when I want and where I want.

i have the 12” (they also make a 20”) Ashford Knitters loom and have been very pleased with it.  The loom is very light and compact and easy to fold up for portability.  It worked just fine with the loom in my lap with the end on the edge of a table, but I also have a stand for it and I use the stand almost all the time. When I am through weaving I can just walk away from it with no need to put the loom anywhere.

just my 2 cents.

If you would like a rigid heddle loom that you can actually have IN your lap, you might consider a Schacht Cricket or Ashford Sampleit. Both brands come in 10 inch or 15/16 inch. I believe the 10 inch models fit more comfortably in the lap, but some do weave with the larger models in their lap. Both are non-folding looms and are sturdy. The Ashford cones with a built in second heddle bracket. The Cricket has extra beams in front and back, like a floor loom. Both are shorter front to back than standard sized rigid heddles, which makes for more frequent wind-on, but also makes for a more portable loom that can comfortably fit on one's lap.

I built a box loom a while ago. It is very portable. Roughly a 8" weaving width, although it is mostly used for bandweaving.

If you want simple this also works. rigid heddle frames

I made a few of these for a sprang workshop. They turned out to work quite well for rigid heddle work. The warp in the back doesn't get in the way too much for narrow warps. A board placed behind the sidebars could can be used to  pull down the warp at the back to create more space.

In this setup you are limited to a warp length slightly under two times the frame height. Looking at primitive backstrap looms, one could come up with a few ideas to increase the warp length.
